Wilmington University Holds Online Program for its 12th Class of Athletics Academic All-Star Student-Athletes

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Now in its 12th year of existence, the Wilmington University athletics department welcomed its honorees for an online program to announce 112 student-athletes earned the distinction of Academic All-Star for its annual Athletics Academic All-Star program.

The night is typically held on campus with student-athletes and parents in attendance to accept the awards, given to student-athletes who carry a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA. Despite the 2020-21 academic school year being historically different for many across the world, the Wilmington University student-athletes still put the work in in the classroom to receive the awards.

The online program began with an introduction from Director of Athletics Dr. Stefanie Whitby before she started announcing the award recipients. Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Matthew Wilson shared words of enthusiasm and his thoughts on the past year before the rest of the award recipients were announced. Associate Director of Athletics Erin Harvey then announced a total of 35 student-athletes a part of the 2021 class of the Chi Alpha Sigma Student-Athlete Honor Society.

Wilmington, the second university in the state of Delaware to hold Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society status, recognized one individual that became a third-year honoree of the academic honor society, 17 individuals that became second-year honorees, and inducted 17 more outstanding individuals into the 2021 class.

In order to be inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, a student-athlete must carry a 3.50 or greater cumulative GPA and be of junior academic status at the beginning of their fifth semester.

Chi Alpha Sigma's purpose is to: encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges and universities; to recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners; to encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics, to recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university; and to mentor and to provide leadership to other athletes.
