2021-22 Wildcats of the Week

Entering its seventh year, the Wildcat of the Week award focuses on individual performances on the field/court/course over the past seven days. Every Monday, two student-athletes (one male and one female) will be selected and featured on the home page as this week's Wildcat of the Week.

Monday, April 25, 2022

Male – John Mead – Gr. – Baseball:
The graduate student continues to produce in the middle of the lineup for the Wildcats, batting 7-for-20 with two doubles and three homers in six games last week. His week started by going 4-for-6 with a double and a homer against West Chester in the Bill Giles Invitational final at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. He batted 2-or-3 with a double and a home run in game one against Post as well, collecting three RBI. He hit another home run in game two against Post as well. Slugged .900 for the week and finished with nine RBI.

Female – Gabbie Saucedo – Fr. – Softball:
The freshman led the Wildcats with a .500 batting average in four games last week, going 6-for-12 with a double. She batted 3-for-4 with two RBI in a game two win over Dominican and then batted 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in game one against Bloomfield. She finished her week with a 1-for-3 game with an RBI in game two against Bloomfield. She is 17th in the CACC with a .369 batting average, ranking 12th overall with nine doubles.

Male – Giovanni Marino – So. – Men's Lacrosse:
Giovanni Marino has been on a scoring tear the last two weeks and has been named the CACC Player of the Week for both. He scored 12 more goals in two games last week, adding an assist for 13 points. He scored five goals and added an assist against Felician and then came out and score seven goals with five ground balls at Dominican on Saturday night. After scoring 16 points n the first six games of the season, Marino has scored 32 points in the last five contests.

Female – Rachel Hirst – Gr. – Women's Bowling:
Coming off her ECC Tournament MVP performance, Rachel Hirst carried her momentum into the NCAA Regionals and led the Wildcats to an upset over No. 2 Nebraska in the opening round. She bowled a 202 against Nebraska in the Traditional match and then came out and bowled a 244 against Fairleigh Dickinson in the Second Round. She added another 215 in the rematch against Nebraska, finishing the three Traditional matches with a 661 total pinfall, finishing fourth among all the bowlers at the regional site with a 220.3 average.

Male – Akeel Blake – Fr. – Track & Field:
Akeel Blake was at it again this past weekend at the Towson Invitational, competing in the jumps and relays for the Wildcats. He won the long jump, coming within centimeters of the NCAA Provisional distance, landing at 7.23-meters to beat out 28 other jumpers. He also finished fifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.95 meters, finishing behind four Division I student-athletes. He was also the second leg of the Wildcats' 4x400-meter relay team that placed ninth overall.

Female – Taylor Gillis – So. – Softball:
The centerfielder helped lead the Wildcats to a 7-1 week, batting .464 (13-for-28) while slugging .643 and reaching base at a .531 clip. She had five doubles and finished second on the team with seven RBI and eight runs scored. She tied a program record with three doubles in game one against Felician, batting 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as well. She also went 3-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored in game two against Molloy. Gillis had two hits in game two against West Chester and a two-run single in the top of the eighth in game one at Shippensburg. She also laid out in right center to make a catch and double off a runner at second against the Golden Falcons.

Male – Logan Stinson – So. – Men's Lacrosse:
The sophomore led the team to a 2-0 week, scoring 10 goals while adding two assists. He scored three goals and added two assists against St. Michael's, but then busted out with seven goals at Lake Erie. The seven goals are the second most in a single game in program history. He also added nine ground balls and three caused turnovers in the week.

Female – Taylor Lambeth – Sr. – Women's Lacrosse:
The senior became just the fourth Wildcat in program to surpass the 200-career point plateau, scoring seven points on Wednesday at Kutztown. She scored three goals and added four assists for a team high seven points. Her 200th point came with her second goal of the game, scoring with 11:33 left in the second quarter. She is now third all-time with 205 career points.

Male – Danny Walsh – Gr. – Men's Basketball:
The graduate student has turned it on of late, including last week where he averaged 19 points per game in leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 week. He shot 55.6 percent from the floor for the week, hitting on 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc. He also went 14-of-15 from the foul line. He scored 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting, hitting 4-of-5 from three-point land, with two rebounds and two assists against Holy Family. He then came out and scored 14 points on 4-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the foul line, adding four rebounds and five assists in a win over Caldwell.

Female – Sydney Jones – Fr. – Women's Bowling:
The freshman was named to the All-Tournament team twice this past weekend at the Griffin Baker Classic. She was named the Tournament MVP on Saturday, leading the Wildcats to the tournament victory with a 3-1 team record and a total pinfall of 4,439 (177.6 average). She led the tournament with a 19.79 Baker frame average to earn MVP status. On Sunday, she led the Wildcats to a 4-1 record and a third-place finish, again leading the team with an 18.93 Baker frame average, finishing third overall and earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team once again.

Male – Caleb Matthews -So. – Men's Basketball:
Caleb ended last week with a career high, scoring 26 points in leading the Wildcats to a win over Chestnut Hill on Sunday. He shot 6-for-9 from three-point territory as well, going 9-for-13 from the floor overall. Caleb also scored 11 points while hitting three three-pointers at Georgian Court and 11 more points against Jefferson. He averaged 16 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game last week. He finished the week shooting 17-for-31 (54.8 percent) from the floor, including 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.

Female – Malia Stout – Sr. – Women's Bowling:
The senior bowler led the Wildcats with a sixth-place finish during the Traditional matches at the Red Flash Invitational on Friday, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She bowled games of 212-169-184-204-213 for a five-match total of 982 (196.40 average). Her 982 is her second best five-match total in her career, as she bowled a 1,017 in the fall of 2018.

Male – Kameron Cooper – Sr. – Men's Basketball:
The senior led the Wildcats with a career high 24 points on Saturday against Holy Family, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the foul line. He also grabbed nine rebounds in the game, adding three assists, four steals, and a block in the Wildcats' win. He scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in a loss to Jefferson in the midweek game. For the week, he shot 40.9 percent from the floor, hitting 3-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc. She scored 16 points per game while adding 7.5 rebounds per game. The Wildcats are now 3-6 overall, 1-1 in CACC play.

Female – Sabreen Muslim – Sr. – Women's Basketball:
The senior led the Wildcats to their first win of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Holy Family on Saturday. She also collected three steals and two blocks in the come-from-behind victory. She shot 6-for-11 from the floor against the Tigers, adding a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line. She went a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line in two games last week, averaging 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She also had six steals in the two games combined.

Male – Justin Thomas – Jr. – Men's Basketball:
The junior guard started off his first season as a Wildcat in an impressive style at the Delta Hotel Doc Jacobs Tipoff Classic. He led the team in rebounds in the season opener against St. Michael's with nine, along with nine points and four assists. A day later against Assumption he recorded his first double-double as a Wildcat, leading the way with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists.

Female – Jimena Garcia Risoto – Jr. – Women's Soccer:
The junior midfielder ended her 2021 campaign with the Wildcats with goals, accolades and some more goals. In the last six games for the 'Cats Garcia Risoto found the back of the net eight-times and 18 total points (8 G, 2 A). Also, having one of her best games of the season on the biggest stage with a hat-trick in the CACC Semi-Final game against Georgian Court, helping secure a 4-1 victory. Her four goals in total in the CACC Conference Tournament helped secure her rightful place in the CACC Women's Soccer All-Tournament Team.

Male – Matt Gonzalez – Fr. – Men's Cross Country:
The freshman runner led the Wildcats to a third place team finish, crossing the line in third overall. He was leading the race for the majority, coming out of the woods the second time with the lead as well. He ran the 8K course in 27:35.5, earning him All-CACC for his third place finish.

Female – Yailynn Ramirez – Fr. – Women's Cross Country:
The freshman runner finished second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship, getting passed for the lead in the final half mile. But she was the top rookie finisher, earning her the CACC Rookie of the Year and a spot on the All-CACC team. Ramirez ran the 5K course in 20:24.4 for the second place finish.

Male – Mamdou Diombera – Sr. – Men's Soccer:
The senior picked a good time to score his first goal of the season, scoring at the 88:32 mark at Felician, giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead before settling for a 3-2 victory on the road and the rain. His goal was the eventual game-winner, pushing the Wildcats to an 11-1-1 overall record and 5-1 in the CACC.

Female – Samantha Emmi – So. – Women's Soccer:
The sophomore centerback has been a steady and reliable defender for the Wildcats all year, getting in on the offensive fun as well throughout the year. This past week, she scored a goal and added two assists in three games. She headed home a goal off a corner in a 2-1 loss to Bridgeport, added an assist in a 4-0 win against Staten Island, and assisted on the game-winner in a 3-0 win at Felician. She now has three goals and two assists on the year, being a main component of the team's set pieces.

Monday, October 4, 2021:

Male – Hakim Williams – Sr. – Men's Soccer:
The senior forward played the hero in both games for the Wildcats last week, scoring a pair of overtime goals. He first scored in the 99th minute at Millersville for a 2-1 victory, and then came back and scored in the 102nd minute against Nyack to secure a 1-0 victory. He helped the Wildcats remain unbeaten as they now stand 9-0-1 overall and ranked #10 in the country.

Female – Jimena Garcia Risoto – Jr. – Women's Soccer:
The junior transfer helped the Wildcats to a 2-0 week last week, scoring two goals and adding two assists. She secured the 4-3 comeback at Goldey-Beacom by scoring in the 90th minute, shooting of from 23 yards out over the keeper with 49 seconds left on the clock. She then came out and assisted on the first goal against Nyack, scored the second, and assisted on the third to help the Wildcats to a 6-0 win. She had six points on the week.

Monday, September 20, 2021:

Male – Pol Romero – Fr. – Men's Soccer:
The freshman properly timed his first collegiate career goal, heading home a cross from Shawn Genus in the 87th minute against No. 16 Gannon to complete the comeback, 2-1. In four games off the bench, he has put up three shots, with two of them on frame. He was named the CACC Rookie of the Week for his efforts

Female – Neus Ramos Moreno – Fr. – Women's Tennis:
The freshman played outstanding tennis at the 2021 ITA East Regional Championships over the weekend, advancing all the way to the Championship Match before finishing runner-up in the bracket style tournament of 78 singles players. It is a new ITA Tournament record for the Wildcats, advancing further than any other Wildcat prior. She also won her singles match against Millersville, 6-0 and 6-0, at No. 3 as the team opened its season, and teamed up with Larize Nel to win their doubles match, 6-2.

Monday, September 13, 2021:

Male – Dan Wyshinski – Fr. – Cross Country:
The freshman runner paced the Wildcats at the LVC Dutchmen Invitational on Saturday, finishing 17th overall in a field of 211 runners. He ran the 8K in 27:32.50, helping the Wildcats finish 7th overall with 17 teams. He bettered his 8K time by nearly a minute and 15 seconds from last week.

Female – Heather Pedrick – So. – Volleyball:
Sophomore right side hitter and setter Heather Pedrick was a stat sheet stuff at the Wildcat Regional Invitational this past weekend. She helped lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 weekend, finishing with 41 kills, 46 assists, and 37 digs in 11 sets. She posted triple-doubles in all three matches, going for 12 kills, 13 assists and 13 digs in three sets against Franklin Pierce; 12 kills, 17 assists, and 14 digs in five sets against Le Moyne; and 17 kills, 16 assists, and 10 digs in three sets against Saint Rose. She also hit .402 for the weekend, committing only eight errors on 83 attempts.

Monday, September 6, 2021:

Male – Shawn Genus – Sr. – Men's Soccer:
The senior forward started the 2021 campaign on fire, scoring three goals and adding an assist in the first two games of the season. He leads the CACC with seven points and three goals. He started the year by scoring two goals and adding an assist in a 5-2 victory over Bentley. He then came out and scored the game-tying goal in the 64th minute against #15 Adelphi on Sunday. Five of his six shots have been on goal.

Female – Angel Oliver – Jr. – Volleyball:
The junior middle was a force at the net in the 2021 season opening tournament hosted by Molloy. She collected 30 blocks in four matches, more than double than anyone else in the CACC. She is averaging 2.00 blocks per set to start the year. She tied the Wilmington program record with 10 block assists in a single match, doing so while adding three solo blocks against American International on Saturday. She also had eight block assists in a 3-1 victory over Molloy. She had a weekend's high 10 kills to go with a .375 hitting percentage against Molloy as well. She averaged 1.67 kills per set and hit .180 for the weekend as well.
