The Wilmington University baseball team got off to a quick start in each game of a doubleheader sweep over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Caldwell, 14-1 and 11-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Wildcats (11-6, 4-0 CACC) scored 12 runs total in the first three innings of the doubleheader, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in game one and a 9-1 lead after three innings in the nightcap. Caldwell (2-11, 0-2 CACC) received a first inning home run in game two but nine errors throughout the doubleheader harmed the Cougars.

Senior Sam Goines led the Wildcats in the opener on Tuesday, batting 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, five RBI, and a run scored. Goines doubled in the games' first run in the bottom of the first inning before hitting another RBI double in the bottom of the third.

After flying out in the fourth, Goines stepped up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth and lifted a shot over the head of the left fielder, scoring all three runners to give the Wildcats an 11-0 lead.

Senior Matt Lopes also knocked in three runs in game one, hitting a two-run double to dead center in the bottom of the third before singling in a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Frank Samluk tossed six scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 on the season, striking out four batters while only allowing four hits. Zach Rumford tossed a scoreless seventh before Ryan Douglas gave up the lone Cougar run in the eighth, but struck out a batter. Matt Frost tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the victory.

After Caldwell took the lead in the top of the first of game two with a solo home run, the Wildcats took the lead for good with an RBI single from Goines and a sacrifice fly by Mike Annone in the bottom half.

Jon Castro roped a two-run triple to left center in the bottom of the second, leading to a four run inning to extend the Wildcats' lead out to 6-1.

Kyle Fries singled in a run in the third before Sean Feeney added an RBI ground out and Castro hit a sacrifice fly, leading to three runs in the third and the 9-1 lead.

Sophomore Tyler Newton earned his second victory of the season with five strong innings, only allowing the first inning home run in the outing. He struck out four batters while only giving up two hits and a walk to move to 2-0 on the year.

Peter Monahan pitched a scoreless sixth inning in facing the minimum before Mike Torres tossed a scoreless seventh, inducing an inning ending double play to face the minimum as well. Kyle Menchaca pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Tyler Fries closed out the doubleheader sweep with a scoreless ninth, striking out three batters.

Goines batted 5-for-8 with two doubles, a triple, seven RBI, and one run scored on the afternoon while Josh Swirchak and Christian Adorno added two hits a piece in each game. Swirchak scored four runs on the afternoon.

The Wildcats take their six-game winning streak into their next contest on Wednesday, as they host Bridgeport at Wilson Field for a East Region game. The first pitch against the Purple Knights is scheduled for 3 p.m.
