Treml Sets Two Career Pitching Records as Wilmington Bats Heat Up in CACC Sweep over Felician

In a matchup of undefeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball teams, one would tend to assume the games would be of the pitcher's duel variety but Saturday was nothing like that as the Wilmington University baseball team took a pair from Felician, 15-2 and 10-8, at Harford Community College.

Although it was the bats that made most of the noise on Saturday, game one starter Jamie Treml has a record breaking day of his own, setting a pair of Wilmington (20-7, 10-0 CACC) career marks in the start.

It didn't take long for the lefty to tie the career strikeout record, posting his 283rd career punch-out with the first Golden Falcon (12-16, 6-2 CACC) batter of the game. Treml needed to wait until the second inning to set his own record however, striking out a batter for the second out of the inning, becoming the all-time strikeout leader in Wilmington's NCAA era. He finished the day with seven, giving him 289 for his career. He would need to wait a little longer for the second record to be broken, however.

The scoring started quickly for the Wildcats, as they put five on the board in the bottom of the first. Frank Samluk began his red-hot afternoon with a leadoff single and came around to score on a fielder's choice for the first run of the game. Mike Annone then tripled in a two before Christian Adorno added an RBI single and Sean Feeney added an RBI double for the quick 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats put three more on the board in the fourth, picking up an RBI triple from Castro, and RBI singles from Josh Swirchak and Lopes. Castro knocked in his third RBI of the day with a run scoring single in the seventh as well.

Felician got on the board in the top of the eighth, but the Wildcats added six insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, blowing the opener wide open.

Treml improved to 4-0 on the year, earning his 27th career victory to move past Joe Matterer to be alone atop the all-time list. He went six scoreless innings on Saturday, striking out seven while only allowing five hits and two walks.

Samluk went 4for-6 with two doubles while Castro batted 3-for-5 with three RBI. Adorno added a 3-for-5 game while Sam Goines, Lopes, and Kyle Fries added two hits each as well.

The bats remained hot to start the second game as Samluk led off the bottom of the first with a double to right center. Swirchak singled to center to easily score Samluk from third. Lopes later singled in Swirchak to give the Wildcats the 2-0 lead after the first inning.

After the Golden Falcons tied the game, Samluk collected his second hit of game two with an RBI single in the second before Lopes singled to left field in the third to score Goines to give Wilmington the 4-2 lead.

Felician again tied the game with two runs in the fourth, but the Wildcats retaliated with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Lopes launched his third home run of the season to center field, bouncing the ball off the top of the wall before it went over for the two-run jack.

Samluk gave the Wildcats an insurance run on a squeeze play in the sixth but the Golden Falcons came back once again with three runs in the seventh to tie the game. The Wildcats again retaliated quickly, manufacturing a run in the seventh. With one out, Goines singled through the left side and then took it upon himself to get to third, stealing both second and third base. That allowed Lopes to hit a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Wildcats the lead for good in the game. Castro gave the Wildcats another RBI single in the eighth before an error put the Wildcats in front, 10-7 heading into the ninth.

Looking for his third save of the week, Tyler Fries came one with two outs in the bottom of the eight, leaving a pair on in that frame as Goines made a diving catch in left to preserve the lead. Fries got himself in trouble in the ninth, giving up a run but escaping with two runners on as Adorno tracked down a foul ball behind third to end the game.

Samluk went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in game two while Goines added a 4-for-5 game himself. Lopes led all hitters with five RBI; going 3-for-3 in the game while Annone and Feeney added two hits each.

Ray Gambone went the first 5.1 innings in game two, striking out a pair while giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Kyle Menchaca earned the victory with an inning of work, improving to 2-1 on the year. Fries' save was the eighth of the season.

The Wildcats finished their busy week 6-1, 4-0 in the CACC. They head to Post on Tuesday for a midweek doubleheader in Waterbury, Conn. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
