Top Seeded Wilmington Baseball Moves into the Winner’s Bracket with 4-1 Victory over No. 4 Dominican in CACC Tournament

Senior Jamie Treml went eight strong innings as Sam Goines paced the Wilmington University baseball team's offense to a 4-1 victory over Dominican in game one of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament at Wilson Field on Thursday morning.

The top seeded Wildcats (31-12) took a 4-0 lead after five full innings, getting an RBI double from Christian Adorno, an RBI single from Josh Swirchak, and a three-run home run by Sam Goines. It was all the Wildcats would need as Treml only allowed one run on two hits, striking out seven in eight strong innings.

Dominican (20-24) got on the board in the top of the sixth with a leadoff home run by Jayson Gray, but that's all the Chargers would get, stranding six runners on base throughout the game.

Goines reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the second before moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Lopes. Adorno doubled to left center, narrowly escaping the glove of Gray to score Goines and put the Wildcats on the board.

Charger starter Peter Martinez left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, and only got in trouble once more in the bottom of the fifth.

Martinez recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth inning but Jon Castro doubled to left center to start a rally. Swirchak got behind with an 0-2 count, but singled back up the middle on a 1-2 count to bring in Castro for the 2-0 lead. Goines than sent a 3-1 pitch to the trees in left, putting the Wildcats ahead 4-0.

Treml put the Chargers down in order in the seventh and worked out of a jam in the eighth, inducing a 5-4-3 inning ending double-play. Tyler Fries came on in the ninth and recorded his 10th save of the year, leaving a runner on first. The save was the 18th of his career, setting a new Wilmington University program record in the team's NCAA era.

With the win the Wildcats move into the winner's bracket of the CACC Tournament, playing at 11 a.m. on Friday. They play the winner of Chestnut Hill and Post.
