NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Four errors harmed the Wilmington University baseball team as Queens defeated the Wildcats, 4-2, in the team's final nonconference matchup before Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Wildcats (2-13) scored a run in the fifth and slimmed the lead even more with a run in the seventh but had runners thrown out at the plate in the sixth and seventh innings which cut the comeback short. Queens (8-10) put three on the board in the second and added an insurance run in the ninth for the nonconference victory.

A two-out error in the second allowed leadoff run to come home before a second error kept the inning alive. A two-run double to left quickly gave the Knights the 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats started to chip away in the fifth inning as Jesse Long brought in Rocky Ferrier with an RBI groundout to third. Ferrier hit a one-out single and JR Gregory moved him into scoring position with a double.

Kendall Small hit a one-out triple in the sixth, but was gunned down at the plate as he left on contact as Nick Macey chopped one to third. Brooks Ryan started the seventh with a double to left, but was once again thrown out trying to score as JR Gregory grounded one to shortstop. Long doubled to put runners on second and third before Max Carney walked to load the bases. Julian Kurych then walked to force in a run and bring the Wildcats to within 3-2. But the Knights were able to get out of the jam as Small flew out to deep right center.

The Knights were able to pick up an insurance run in the ninth, cashing in on another two-out error. The Wildcats were unable to get anything going in the home half, going 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Ferrier led the Wildcats by going 2-for-4 while Ryan, Gregory, and Long all added doubles with their lone hit. Small went 1-for-4 with his triple.

Rudy Gervolino went the first 4.0 innings for the Wildcats, giving up three runs (three unearned) on three hits. Zach Frederick allowed two hits in the next 3.1 innings before Noah Latshaw allowed a run in 1.1 innings of work. Menchaca struck out the final batter of the ninth to get out of the jam.

The Wildcats begin CACC play Wednesday as they open with a doubleheader against USciences. The first game begins with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch at Wilson Field.
