WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - - Palm Beach Atlantic scored 11 runs in two innings late in the ballgame to seal a 14-1 victory over the No. 19 Wilmington University baseball team on Wednesday night at Jake Rubin Field.
The Wildcats (5-4) bats were silenced on Wednesday, as they only scored one unearned run in the top of the seventh inning against the Sailfish (7-11). The Wildcats were outhit, 15-6, in the game.
Wildcat starter Noah Latshaw struck out four in 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. He left two runners on base in the first before sitting the Sailfish down in order in the second. Latshaw allowed a two-out RBI single in the third, putting the Sailfish on the board.
Another two-out RBI single in the fifth gave the Sailfish a 2-0 lead as the Wildcats' offense could only muster three hits in the first five innings, two of which came in the third inning, leaving two runners on.
A two-out, two-run triple in the sixth gave the home team a 5-0 lead before the Wildcats finally got on the board in the top of the seventh with a two-out error. Palm Beach Atlantic then widened the margin in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs on eight hits in the inning. The scoring was highlighted by a grand slam with two outs in the frame, giving the Wildcats a 12-1 lead. The Sailfish followed with a solo homer, capping the scoring in the seventh with back-to-back homers and a 13-1 lead.
Luke Johnson was the only Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the game. Quintin Ivy, Max Carney, Brock Nowell, and Dakota Graham all added hits for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats run through the Sunshine State Conference came to an end on Wednesday, as they return to East Region action on Thursday afternoon. The tem will square off against Queens College at 1:00 p.m., on the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.
