Five Wildcats Named CACC Players of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the third straight week, Wilmington University athletics has student-athletes named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, this week with five student-athletes covering three sports, as announced by the conference on Monday.

Baseball's Luke Johnson was named Player of the Week, as Brad Scull earned Pitcher of the Week after their trip to Florida. Men's Lacrosse's Noah Given was named Co-Goalkeeper of the Week, as Lashay Ross was named Player of the Week and Delaney Steele earned Rookie of the Week on the women's side.

For the second time this season, senior Luke Johnson has been named Player of the Week for his performances down in Florida. Johnson batted .450 with nine hits in 20 at bats, and eight RBI for the Wildcats throughout six games played. He had three games with at least two hits, including four games with at least two RBI, including in the 8-0 win against Queens (N.Y.), where he went 2-4, with a home run. The outfielder totaled two home runs and had one double during the trip. He finished the week with a .560 on base percentage, with a .800 slugging percentage. He leads the CACC in RBIs with 19 and in homeruns with four. He is fifth in the league batting .415 on the season.

Redshirt senior Brad Scull was named Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season. Scull went 8.0 innings, allowing only five hits, without a walk, and had 11 strikeouts in the Wildcats' 8-0 win over Queens (N.Y.). Scull allowed two doubles during the contest, but finished the game with no walks and only one wild pitch. The 8-0 victory was the first shutout by Scull on the season. He currently leads the CACC with three wins, is third in the league with a 0.93 ERA, and is first in the conference with 28 strikeouts.

Men's Lacrosse's Noah Given has been named Co-Goalkeeper of the Week for a second straight week after making eight saves, while only allowing five goals in the Wildcats' 12-5 win over Davis & Elkins. Given played all 60 minutes in the net and finished with a .615 save percentage. The sophomore currently leads the CACC with a 9.68 goals against average, while ranking first in goals against with 35. He is fourth in the league with a 50.7 save percentage.

Lashay Ross earned Player of the Week for Women's Lacrosse after helping the Wildcats to a 3-0 record. Ross scored 11 goals on 22 shots, with four coming from free possession attempts, and two assists throughout the week. She finished the week collecting 22 groundballs, winning 21 draw controls, and causing 12 turnovers. She had a season-high six goals in the Wildcats 19-16 win over Newberry, while collecting a season-high 11 groundballs and making five caused turnovers. She finished the week with 13 points. The red shirt junior is first in the CACC with 19 goals, and second taking 33 shots. She is third in the league with a total of 22 points.

Delaney Steele earned Rookie of the Week for the women for the first time this season. The redshirt sophomore scored seven goals on 14 shots for the Wildcats, had 11 assists, and finished with a team high 18 points throughout three games. She also collected four groundballs and had three caused turnovers. Steele scored four goals, including the game winning goal with six seconds left in regulation, and had two assists in the Wildcats 13-12 win over Mars Hill. She also had a season-high five assists against Newberry. She finished the week with a 4.67 shots per game percentage, 2.33 goals per game, 3.67 assists per game, and 6.00 points per game. She leads the conference with 23 points, is second in the league with 13 assists, is tied for fourth in the CACC with 10 goals, and is tied with teammate Brooke Siebert with 26 shots on the season.

Softball's Lauren Lopez, along with Men's Lacrosse's Dylan McCleaft were named to this week's Honor Roll after their performances this past week. Lopez had 10 hits in 27 at bats, with 11 RBI for the Wildcats throughout 10 games. She had three doubles and finished with a .370 batting average. McCleaft finished the week with four goals on six shots and had two assists in the Wildcats' 12-5 win over Davis & Elkins. The senior collected four groundballs and had one caused turnover to finish with six points.
