TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Wilmington Baseball Looks to Defend Title as CACC Tournament Begins

NEWARK, Del. - - The 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Double Elimination Tournament begins on Thursday and the Wildcats secured their spot with a win over North Division No. 3 Nyack, 14-3, and will now play South Division No. 4 Jefferson at Post University in Waterbury, Conn.

The double elimination tournament begins Thursday, May 9 and a champion will be crowned on Saturday, May 11 at Municipal Stadium. The winner of the CACC Tournament earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

The Wildcats are vying for their eighth CACC Tournament Championship since winning their first in 2007. They've won the conference tournament in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2018. Last season the Wildcats came out of the loser's bracket to win the CACC Tournament and advance to the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

Scouting the No. 2 Wilmington University Wildcats:

The Wildcats advanced to the double-elimination portion of the CACC Tournament after defeating No. 3 Seeded North Division Nyack, 14-3, in the single elimination Play-In-Game. This is the second consecutive year that the Wildcats advanced to the double elimination portion of the tournament.

The Wildcats had a record 10 all-conference selections yesterday, led by Eddie Nevins, who earned CACC Player of the Year for his first year at WilmU. Seniors Kendall Small, Luke Johnson, and Dan Hyatt were named First Team All-CACC, while Frank Nigro, Quintin Ivy, Julian Kurych, Sean Deely, Brad Scull, and Zach Frederick all earned Second Team All-CACC.

Eddie Nevins leads the CACC batting .442 on the year, while sitting fourth with 51 RBI. He leads the team with 68 hits, including 14 doubles, four triples, and eight homeruns.

Kendall Small leads the CACC with 53 RBI, as Luke Johnson is right behind him in second with 52 RBI on the year, while also sitting sixth in the conference with a .380 batting average. Dan Hyatt is first in the league with a 2.28 ERA, with eight wins on the season. He also sits fourth in the league with 70 strikeouts.

Deely is third in the CACC with 82 strikeouts in 60.2 IP. He has a 5.08 ERA with an overall record of 6-3. Frank Nigro is batting .282 with 42 hits on the season. He has been a force behind the plate for WilmU, collecting 341 putouts. Julian Kurych is batting .326 and also has 42 hits on the season for 35 RBI. Quintin Ivy is third on the team batting .391 with 34 hits, including six doubles, one triple, and six homeruns. Brad Scull has a 1.18 ERA in seven appearances, with 48 strikeouts. Zach Frederick is third for WilmU with an ERA of 1.79. In 25.2 IP he has 21 strikeouts.

As a team, the Wildcats are first in the league with a .343 batting average overall, and also sit first in the CACC with a .340 batting average in conference play. They are also first in all of NCAA Division II with 604 hits, including 115 doubles on the year, with 75 of them coming in CACC play. They are also second in all of Division II with 471 runs scored on the year, and fourth overall with their .343 batting average.

On the mound, the Wildcats are also first in the CACC with a 4.02 team ERA overall. That number goes even lower in CACC play, also ranking first with a 3.83 team ERA. The Wildcats pitching staff leads the conference in averaging 9.41 K/9 overall, while averaging 8.96 against CACC competition. The staff is 10th in all of NCAA DII with a strikeout to walk ratio of 2.86.
