Jefferson Scores Three Times in Eighth Inning to Steal Game From Baseball, 8-6

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A three-run eighth inning pushed Jefferson past the Wilmington University baseball team, 8-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. Jefferson swept the season series from the Wildcats, 3-0.

The Wildcats (11-4, 11-5 CACC) battled back and took leads in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Rams (17-9, 14-6 CACC) rallied with a three-run eighth inning to take the ballgame, 8-6.

A hit-by-pitch and an error allowed the Rams to score two runs in the bottom of the first, keeping the inning alive. A two-out hit batter put a runner on, and then an error and an RBI triple put the home team up 2-0.

Dan Hyatt hit a two-out double in the third, scoring Adrian Jimenez to put the Wildcats on the board. The Wildcats had a chance in the fourth, but back to-back strikeouts left two runners.

Quintin Ivy started the sixth with his team leading sixth homer to tie the game and JJ Killen followed with a single to restart the inning. Now with a runner on second, Shawn Haut hit an RBI double to give the Wildcats the lead for the first time, 3-2.

But the Rams retaliated with three runs of their own in the home half of the sixth. A one-out single started the rallied and then three straight walks produced the first run. An error on a pickoff attempt produced the second run and then an RBI single put the Rams ahead, 5-3.

The Wildcats retook the lead in the top of the seventh once again, putting three of their own on the board. Joey Cautillo and Dan Hyatt started the inning off with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Quintin Ivy hit an RBI single. Now with two outs, Ivy and Hyatt advanced on a balk, plating Hyatt, tying the game, 5-5. Jack McDonald followed with a go-ahead double to left, putting the Wildcats ahead, 6-5.

Looking for insurance runs, the Wildcats left two on in the top of the eighth. The Rams tied the game with a one-out triple in the bottom of the eighth. Lance Hinton got eh second out of the inning, but then a walk and another RBI triple scored two, giving the Rams the lead, 8-6.

The Wildcats went down in order in the ninth, unable to mount the final comeback.

Dan Hyatt led the Wildcats with three hits, going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Quintin Ivy batted 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI while JJ Killen, Adrian Jimenez, and Joey Cautlillo each collected two hits as well.

Starter Matt Boyko went five innings with five strikeouts, allowing two unearned runs in the no decision.

The Wildcats have little time to think about the loss, as they turn around and face Goldey-Beacom tomorrow afternoon at Wilson Field.
