NEWARK, Del. - - Four standouts from the 2022 Wilmington University baseball season have earned postseason recognition as the sport's three organizations have announced their All-Region Teams.
Seniors John Mead (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Ryan Sandberg (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) were unanimous First Team All-Region performers by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA), and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Senior Quintin Ivy (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) was named a First Team All-Region performer by the NCBWA and Second Team All-Region by the ABCA and D2CCA. Freshman reliever Alex Krick (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) was a unanimous Second Team All-Region performer by the three organizations.
John Mead finished with a 1.124 OPS, finishing second on the team with a .369 batting average while leading the Wildcats with a .688 slugging percentage. His 19 doubles led the CACC and he ranks 18th in NCAA Division II in averaging 0.43 doubles per game. Of his 58 hits this season, 30 went for extra bases, as he added two triples and nine homers on the season. His 57 RBI are second most in the CACC, ranking 91st in all of NCAA Division II.
Ryan Sandberg was named the CACC Pitcher of the Year after going 9-3 in 13 starts, tossing 78 innings and throwing a pair of complete games. He broke the program's single season record with 110 strikeouts this season, averaging 12.69 strikeouts per nine innings. He only walked 19 batters and finished with a 3.35 ERA. He is 21st in the country with a 5.79 strikeout to walk ratio while his 110 punchouts rank 13th in all of NCAA DII. He is also 64th overall with a 1.15 WHIP on the season.
Quintin Ivy is the lone returning All-Region performer, as he was a unanimous First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-American last season. He finished second on the team with a .636 slugging percentage and a .472 on-base percentage, coming to a 1.108 OPS for the year. he became the program's home run leader this season with his sixth homer of the year (22nd of his career), finishing the year with 11 bombs and 27 for his career. Of his 39 hits this season, 20 of them went for extra bases, as he added eight doubles and a triple, finishing the year with a .302 batting average. He ranks eighth in the country in averaging 0.97 walks per game and led the CACC and is 29th in the country with 27 stolen bases.
Alex Krick didn't settle into the closer's role until late in the season, but ended up in a tie for the CACC lead with seven saves, tying teammate AJ Stento. Krick allowed two runs (one earned) in 17 innings this year, making 18 appearances out of the bullpen. He went 1-0 with those seven saves, allowing 10 hits while striking out 13 with seven walks, accumulating to a team leading 0.53 ERA. He had two saves in the CACC Tournament, including the Championship game.
The four All-Region performers led the Wildcats to a 31-13 overall record, the program's nine CACC Tournament Championship, and the chance to host an NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament at Wilson Field for the first time in program history in 2022.
