Freddy Braun Captures Medalist Honors on First Playoff Hole As Wilmington Golf Earns Fifth Straight CACC Championship

A playoff hole was needed for two Wilmington University golf team student-athletes to determine the 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship medalist honoree as the Wildcats captured their fifth straight CACC Championship on Wednesday at the ACE Club.

Sophomore Freddy Braun sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat teammate and CACC Rookie of the Year Joey Russo to become the 2015 CACC Championship individual medalist, finishing the tournament with a 70-74 in the two rounds, compiling a 144 for an even-par score.

Russo, trailing Braun by three strokes entering Wednesday, made a charge throughout the day and had a chance on the final hole of regulation. After a pair of rain delays that halted the file hole, his approach stuck pin high on the 18th green, about 18 feet from the hole. But he pulled his birdie putt before hitting the par putt to finish in a tie with Braun.

Braun went first on the playoff hole, playing a sudden death format starting at the first tee. Braun's tee-shot split the fairway while Russo went slightly right and into the short rough. But Russo stuck his approach to within 15 feet of the hole after Braun's shot fell about 18-feet of the pin. Braun sank his birdie putt while Russo pushed his attempt in the All-Wildcat playoff hole.

Braun shot a 70-74 for a two-day score of 144 to finish even par. Russo shot a 73-71 for his 144, finishing with an even par score. Senior Alexander Lautenschlaeger produced two solid rounds, finishing in a tie for third with a 75-74 for a 149 (+5). All three Wildcats earned a spot on the CACC All-Tournament Team.

Junior Andreas Lunding shot back-to-back 77's in the CACC Tournament, rounding out the Wildcat scoring on Wednesday to give the team its 591 two-day score. Lunding finished in a tie for 12th overall in the tournament. Junior Jordan Lamb rounded out the Wildcats on the golf course on Wednesday, shooting a 77-80 for a 157 (+13) and finishing in a tie for 15th overall.

The Wildcats went for a team score of 295 on Tuesday before posting a 296 on Wednesday, finishing the tournament with a 591 (+15). Concordia finished as the runner-ups, posting a 308-305 for a two-day score of 613 (+37). Nyack placed third with a 307-315 for a 622 (+46) total.

The Wildcats now prepare for the 2015 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Regional Tournament that is scheduled to start on May 4 in Nashport, Ohio. The top three teams after three rounds in the Super Regional advance to the NCAA Division II Championship.
