MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - - The Wilmington University golf team improved its score by five strokes in the second round, shooting a team best 283 on Monday at the Buccaneer Invitational at the Normandy Shores Golf Club, the home course of Barry University.
The second round team score of 283 bests the team's previous low of 284 set in the first round of the 2012 Buccaneer Invitational. The team shot a 288-283 for a 571 (+3) and sit in seventh place overall after two rounds.
Junior Miguel Siercke sat in second place after the first round, coming out of the gates with a 67 (-4) in the first 18-holes. He closed out the day with a 74 to sit in a tie for 16th place overall with 141 (-1).
Freshman Ryan Rucinski improved his first round score of 73 by four strokes on Monday afternoon, shooting a 69 (-2) to finish the day with a 142, even par score. He sits directly behind Siercke in a tie for 20th overall.
Playing in his first tournament of the spring season, senior Andreas Lunding improved his second round by eight strokes, closing out the day with a 69 (-2). He moved up 33 spots on the leaderboard to sit in a tie for 44th overall after a 77-69 for a 146 (+4).
Sophomore Joey Russo also improved in the second round, shooting a 74-72 for a two-round score of 146 (+4) on Monday. He is tied with Lunding and seven others in 44th place.
Junior Sam Clark rounded out the Wildcats scoring, also improving in the second round and finishing with a 74-73 for a 147 (+5). He is just behind Lunding and Russo on the leaderboard in a tie for 53rd overall.
Playing as an individual, junior Freddy Braun shot an 80-74 for a 154 (+12) on Monday. He moved up five spots and is in a tie for 84th overall.
The Wildcats are 11 strokes off the lead with one round to play, as nationally No. 5 Lynn shot a 275-285 for a 560 (-8) team score. Johnson & Wales (Fla.) is in second with a 285-276 for a 561 (-7) while nationally No. 3 Nova Southeastern sits in third with a 284-279, 563 (-5).
Lynn's Mateo Gomez shot a first round low 65 before backing it up with a 70 in the afternoon to sit atop the leaderboard. He finished the day with a 135 (-7) to lead the field by two strokes.
The third and final round begins on Tuesday morning at the Normandy Shores Golf Club.
