Golf Finishes 14th Overall in First Tournament of 2019

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – In their second and final day of action at the 2019 Jay Jennison Cup, the Wilmington University golf team dropped to 14th overall at the Palencia Club.

The Wildcats finished the day shooting a 324 in the single round to fall into the 14th spot of the tournament with a 954 (+90).

Enrique Valverde entered the third round sitting in seventh place, but a 79 (+7) round would drop him tied for 17th for a 225 overall score throughout the three rounds. Valverde also finished plus one on the par-three holes, while finishing five under par on the par-five holes, tying for third overall for the tournament. He finished second overall with 13 birdies throughout the three rounds.

Braden McKay had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, as he shot a 78 (+6) in the third round to finish tied for 56th for a 239 overall. Arvy Shongwe would shoot a 78 on the day to tie for 62nd for an overall score of 243 (+27). The senior was one of eight golfers who had an eagle in the tournament.

Matthew Kettleson and Tyler Cleaves would round out the Wildcats, as Kettleson finished 70th overall with a score of 82 (+10), while Cleaves finished right behind him, tying for 71st with a score of 85 (+15) on the day.

Carlos Marrero from West Florida topped the leader board, as he finished the third round shooting one under par for a 212 (-4) for the tournament. West Florida would take the first place spot to finish with an 876 (+12).

The Wildcats head to Petersburg, Va., next Monday as they will play in The Griffin Invitational at the Country Club of Petersburg. Rounds one and two will be on Monday, with round three on Tuesday.
