Golfers Close Fall Season with Season’s Best 289 at the Miami Intercollegiate

DORAL, Fla. - - The Wilmington University golf team closed its fall season with its best score of the year, shooting a 289 on Tuesday in the third round of the Miami Intercollegiate at the Red Tiger course on Trump National Doral, finishing in seventh overall.

The Wildcats finished the tournament shooting rounds of 305, 305, and 289 for an 898 (+58), coming in seventh overall. Lynn won the tournament with rounds of 280-272-283 for an 835 (-5). Washburn came in second with rounds of 288-287-284 for an 859 (+19).

Enrique Valverde led the Wildcats on Tuesday and for the tournament, shooting a team best 71 (+1) in third round, finishing in a tie for 25th overall with a 221 (+11). He posted rounds of 76-74-71 for his 221. Valverde finished tied for second on all the par three holes, finishing at even par for the tournament.

Freshman Ali Ladak was the second Wildcat scorer, finishing in a tie for 31st overall, posting rounds of 74-77-73 for a 224 (+14). Ladak finished tied for third in the tournament with 37 pars.

Senior Braden McKay also posted a 71 on Tuesday, finishing the tournament with scores of 81-76-71 for a 228 (+18) and in a tie for 39th overall. McKay had the lone eagle in the tournament for the Wildcats, and led the team on the par five holes, finishing at three-under par on all the par fives.

Senior Arvy Shongwe was the fourth scorer for the Wildcats, finishing in a tie for 43rd overall with a 229 (+19). He finished with rounds of 74-77-78, finishing with 34 pars in the tournament.

Tyler Cleaves was the final Wildcat for the team scoring, finishing in 46th with a 235 (+25). He improved in each round, shooting scores of 84-77-74 for his 235 total.

Three Wildcats also participated as individuals, led by senior Matthew Kettleson's223 (+13). He finished in a tie for 28th, the second Wildcat on the leaderboard. He posted scores of 77-75-71, improving his score in each round.

Freshman Nathan Potts came in 47th overall with rounds of 83-75-83 for a 241 (+31) while senior Jack Dixon rounded out the Wildcats on the course, coming in 48th overall with rounds of 80-84-78 for a 242 (+32).

Southern Wesleyan's Eric Shea won the tournament with a 201 (-9), shooting rounds of 68-66-67, coming from third place after the first round. Lynn's Toto Gana finished second with a 204 (-6) while his teammate Carlos Bustos rounded out the top three with a 207 (-3).

The Wildcats are off until the spring season, when they'll get back to action to prepare for the NCAA Super Regional Tournament at the beginning of May.
