MONROE, N.C. - - The Wilmington University Men's Golf team wrapped up their play at the 22nd Annual Hargett Memorial Invitational after the conclusion of the third round, finishing in tenth place at the Rolling Hills Country Club.
The Wildcats shot a 309 in their final round on Tuesday. Sophomores Matthew Pulgini and Tyler Cleaves led the way on the final round of play.
Tyler Cleaves finished out an impressive campaign at the Hargett Memorial Invitational finishing 2 under in the final round, for a score of 70. Cleaves score of 70 was tied for fourth, for the lowest score in the third round. He also finished tied-fourth individually overall, shooting two-under-par for the tournament. Cleaves was one of five players in the tournament to shoot under par after three rounds. Cleaves was able to read the greens well, as he was tied for first in total birdies with 13. Cleaves was tied for third in Par-3 scoring with a total of one-under on all Par-3 holes.
Pulgini started the round on the 8th hole and converted both of his birdie putts on back-to-back holes to start the round 2 under. He was then able to birdie four more birdies on the day, totaling six in round three. Four of the birdies were on par-5 holes. Pulgini finished the round with a score of 73(+1). His third-round helped him finish tied for seventh in Par-5 scoring. Pulgini also was tied for total birdies after three rounds with 12. Pulgini finished the tournament moving up six spots from where he started at tied for 41st to tied for 35th.
Pablo Quintero, Jan Lekes, and Nathan Potts all finished with a score of 83 (+11) on Tuesday. Quintero was able to hit back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14. He was the lone Wildcat to birdie hole 14 on the day, a par 4. Quintero finished the round four birdies. Quintero was one out of only 14 players in the tournament to make an eagle, out of 69 players. Quintero was also tied-tenth for birdies for the tournament with 9 total, over three rounds.
Jan Lekes was able to birdie hole 13, a par-5 hole. Lekes also finished with eight pars on the day. Nathan Potts was able to also birdie a par-5 hole, by sinking a birdie putt on hole number 6.
Belmont Abbey came from behind to win the Tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 283 to surpass Queens (N.C.). Ollie Smith from Queens won the individual honors with a 211 (-5), shooting rounds of 69-71-71 to win the tournament by two strokes.
The Wildcats get back on the course next week, as they head to the Crofton Invitational hosted by California (Pa.) at the Crofton Country Club in Crofton, Maryland. The first two rounds will take place on Monday, March 21 with the final round on Tuesday, March 22.
