WATERTOWN, Conn. - - The Wilmington University golf team improve upon its first round by 10 strokes on the first day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships on Monday, sitting in third place with one round to play.
The Wildcats enter the third and final round of play 20 strokes behind the lead and 11 strokes behind second place. Goldey-Beacom is leading the tournament with rounds of 289-299 for a 588 (+20). Post, who is hosting the Championship at Watertown Golf Club, is in second with rounds of 304-292 for a 597 (+29).
Tyler Cleaves had one of the best rounds of the day in his second round, shooting a 71 (E) and is in a tie for second place overall. He shot rounds of 74-71 for a 145 (+3), three strokes off the leader Mason Kucy from Goldey-Beacom. Cleaves leads the entire tournament with 28 pars in his two rounds on Monday, collecting three birdies as well. He is tied for the tournament lead on par three scoring, finishing at one-over par. He is second overall on all the par four holes as well, finishing two-over par on Monday. Cleaves had 14 pars in the second round alone, birdieing holes 11 and 12 to get to one-under par before settling on 71, even par.
Nathan Potts is in a tie for sixth overall, improving his second round by five strokes, shooting scores of 77-72 for a 149 (+7). Potts is also tied atop the leaderboard on the par three scoring, finishing the two rounds at one-over par, averaging 3.13 stroke per par-three hole. He leads the Wildcats and is second in the tournament with seven birdies after two rounds, doing most of his damage on par fives, finishing at three-under par on Monday. Five of his birdies came in the second round alone.
Pablo Quintero is in a tie for 20th overall, also improving his second round by five strokes. He posted scores of 82-77 for a 159 (+17). He is tied for eighth overall on par five scoring, averaging 4.67 stroke per hole and finishing at two-under par. Quintero is second on the team in finishing the two rounds with five birdies. Three of his birdies came in his second round 77 (+6).
Blake Ramirez is in a tie for 24th overall after his two rounds, improving his second round by four strokes. He shot rounds of 83-79 for a 162 (+20) on Monday. Ramirez is tied for seventh in par three scoring for the tournament, finishing the short holes at three-over par. He had a birdie putt fall in each round.
Matthew Pulgini had the second best first round of any Wildcat, shooting a 76 (+5), but withdrew from the second round. He is ineligible individual leaderboard but can still come back on Tuesday and shoot in the third round and count towards the team's score. He had 13 pars in his lone round on Monday.
The Wildcats will be in the final grouping on Tuesday and will begin teeing off at 10:00 a.m. Tyler Cleaves will be in the final group of the tournament, teeing off at 10:36 a.m.
