Tyraire Ponzo-Meek Named Preseason First Team All-Area by City of Basketball Love

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - After a standout junior season, Wilmington University men's basketball guard, Tyaire Ponzo-Meek accumulated a numerous amount of accolades. He earned the City of Basketball Love (COBL) All-Area Second Team nomination after his impressive junior season. Heading into the 2016-17 season, Ponzo-Meek, a senior guard, was named to the COBL All-Area Preseason First Team.

Ponzo-Meek (Wilmington, Del./Howard) was the 13th highest scorer in the country with 23.6 points per game along, leading the entire East Region. In conference play, he was second in the CACC with 57 steals, fourth with 107 assists, and grabbing 7.4 rebounds per game, which was 10th in the conference. He scored in double figures in `all 28 games including 20 or more points in 21 games.

Some notable games of Ponzo-Meek's last season were when he earned a career high 37 points against West Chester on New Year's Eve. On January 6, he had another 30-point game against Bloomfield putting him with back-to-back 30-point games with 34 points for the night. He was named the CACC Co-Player of the Week on January 4 following the games against West Chester and Bloomfield. He had another two-game run of consecutive 30-point games on January 20 with 30 points against Georgian Court and January 22 with 36 points against Concordia.

He also became the first Wildcat to earn First Team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honors since Corye Payton during the 2011-12 season. Ponzo-Meek is also the first Wildcat to earn any All-Conference recognition since Brandon Fox was named Honorable Mention during the 2012-13 season.
