NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's basketball team crashed the offensive glass to pull out a 74-69 nonconference victory over visiting Millersville on Wednesday at the WU Athletics Complex, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Wildcats (4-3) got on top of 14 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second-half points, coming back from three-point halftime deficit to defeat the Marauders (3-2). Ten of the offensive rebounds came in second half as the Wildcats out-rebounded Millersville, 49-38, for the contest.
Brian Adkins' three-pointer with 10:06 to play gave the Wildcats the lead for good, 53-50, despite the Marauders closing to within a single point on multiple occasions. Adkins hit four three-pointers in the game, coming off the bench to score 12 points and adding five defensive rebounds.
Tyaire Ponzo-Meek went 9-of-10 from the foul line in the second half, finishing 10-of-12 for the game and 7-of-16 from the floor for a game high 25 points. Tajee Almon was the rim protector for the Wildcats, denying five Marauder shots while grabbing a game high 11 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive boards. Nick Richards hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Wildcats begin their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference slate on Saturday when they host perennial favorite Philadelphia at the WU Athletics Complex at 3:00 p.m.
