Three Student-Athletes Featured in This Week’s CACC Weekly Reports

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The beginning of the winter-spring crossover season has produced three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, as the Wilmington University men's basketball team is gearing up for a playoff run and the softball team got off to a great start this past weekend.

Redshirt sophomore Jermaine Head helped lead the Wildcats to a 1-1 record, being named the CACC Rookie of the Week for men's basketball. Sophomore Rosa'Lynn Burton and freshman Makayla McCarthy helped the softball team to a 4-2 start to the 2018 season, being named the CACC Co-Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Head (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) averaged 24.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game in two games last week. He shot 55.56 percent from the floor, including 6-of-14 from beyond the three-point arc. Head added a 2.5 assist to turnover ratio for the week.

Against Chestnut Hill, Head went for 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting, adding eight assists, seven rebounds, and two steals. He then went for 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, adding six rebounds and two assists in a win against Post on Saturday. Head has already set a new single season program record for the Wildcats, dishing out 120 so far on the year.

Burton (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) played in five of the six games this past weekend for the softball team, leading the way with a .500 on-base percentage, seven runs scored, and two doubles, and second on the team with a .450 batting average, nine hits, five RBI, and three stolen bases.

The sophomore collected three hits against Slippery Rock and East Stroudsburg, adding a two hit game against Kutztown. She hit doubles against Le Moyne and East Stroudsburg, picking up two RBI in the games against Slippery Rock and East Stroudsburg. She scored at least one run in all five games. She also went 3-for-3 on the base paths, with two stolen bases against Kutztown.

McCarthy (El Cajon, Calif./Steele Canyon) made her collegiate debut this weekend, playing all six games, but pitching in four of them. The freshman went 2-1 in the circle for the Wildcats, adding one save over the weekend. She struck out 18 in 20.1 innings pitched, finishing with a 2.41 ERA.

She made her pitching debut against Le Moyne, striking out six batters in 6.1 innings. McCarthy came back with six scoreless innings against Slippery Rock, striking out six more while only allowing two hits for her first collegiate win. She also started against Lock Haven, throwing her first complete game of the year. She struck out six more batters, allowing three runs on three hits in a 7-3 victory. McCarthy then came on to pitch the seventh inning against East Stroudsburg, locking down the victory with her first collegiate save. She also batted .429 with nine hits, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Nick Richards was named to the men's basketball honor roll while Bloomfield's Nick Davidson and Dominican's Daniel Grant shared the Player of the Week honors. Caldwell's Eric Johnson-Alford was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Women's basketball freshman Jadyn Whitsitt was named to the CACC women's basketball weekly Honor Roll as well.

Burton shared the CACC Softball Player of the Week award with Georgian Court's Samantha Reilly while Felician's C.J. Apacible rounded out the Weekly Awards by being named the CACC Rookie of the Week. Wilmington's Lauren Lopez was named to the weekly Honor Roll.
