NEWARK, Del. - - Four players scored in double digits, led by a career best 36 from Jermaine Head as the Wilmington University men's basketball collected back-to-back wins with a 96-82 victory over Bloomsburg on Monday night at the WU Athletics Complex.
Coming off their first victory of the season on Saturday, the upstart Wildcats (2-8) got off to a hot start against the Huskies (5-3), racing out to as large as a 25-5 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. But the game wouldn't get away from the Huskies in the first half.
The visitors clawed their way back to within as few as four with four minutes to play in the half, hitting a three-pointer to cap a 22-6 run and get as close as 31-27. But the Wildcats answered with a run of their own to end the half, hitting three straight three-pointers and went into the halftime break leading 45-35.
An offensive putback from Jermaine Head pushed the lead back out to 17, 61-44, with 16:50 left in regulation. The lead again grew to as large as 19, 72-53, as Taalib Holloman hit a jumper on the break with 12:05 to play. The Huskies then went on a 14-5 run to close the gap back down to 10 with 7:45 left, and even cut it to single digits with 5:16 left in regulation, 82-73, but the Wildcats were able to settle down and close out the contest.
A Jermaine Head three-pointer brought the Wildcats' lead back out to 18, sealing the deal before the team settled on a 14-point victory, 96-82.
The redshirt senior Jermaine Head finished the night with 36 points, setting a new career high while also tying for the third most in a single contest in program history. He hit five three-pointers in the game while adding 11-for-12 from the foul line in the second half. Four of his five three-pointers came in the first half.
Jordan Harding added 18 points by hitting four three-pointers and Danny Walsh added four more three-pointers to finish with 14 points. Taalib Holloman was the final Wildcat in double digits with 10 points.
In all, the Wildcats hit 16 three-pointers in the game, tying for the second most in program history. The team hit 17 three-pointers against Georgian Court in 2014. The team also went 22-for-25 from the foul line in the contest.
The Wildcats have one more game in the 2019 calendar year, as they head to Goldey-Beacom to renew the in-state CACC rivalry on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off inside the Joseph West Jones Center is set for 3:00 p.m.
