NEWARK, Del. - - Post's constant pressure and points in the paint carried them to a 90-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University men's basketball team at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The North Division leaders from Post (15-6, 7-3 CACC) scored 54 points in the paint, shooting 65.2 percent (30-of-46) from the floor inside the three-point arc on Saturday. The Wildcats (6-15, 4-8 CACC) had three players in double figures, but only shot 37.7 percent from the floor for the game.
Danny Walsh and Taalib Holloman sent the Wildcats out to a quick 4-0 lead, but then the Eagles scored 16-straight to take a 16-4 lead with 13:15 lead. The first half lead grew to as large as 18 points, 33-15, with 6:33 to play before Jermaine Head started a 6-0 run with back-to-back buckets in the paint. Danny Walsh then brought the Wildcats to within 12, 39-27, with 1:42 to play in the half with another layup, but Post answered by going on a 5-2 run to end the half, taking a 44-29 lead into the break.
Taalib Holloman hit a three-pointer in the corner to start the second half, and laid in another bucket on the Wildcats' next possession, getting to within 12 points, 46-34, in the early going. Post used a 14-5 spurt from there to take their first 20-point lead of the game, 60-39, with 14:39 showing on the clock. The closest the Wildcats would be able to get the rest of the way would be 16 points, after a three-pointer and two from the foul line from Jordan Handing.
The Eagles lead grew to 28 points with 9:23 left before the Wildcats made another little run to cut the deficit to 19, 74-55, with 6:55 to play. But the Eagles held them there, again turning up the pressure and taking the lead out to as large as 30, 90-60, with 1:19 left.
Both teams turned the ball over 15 times, but the Eagles were able to turn them into 21 points at the other end while the Wildcats only converted their steals into 11 points. The Eagles also turned 14 offensive rebounds into 22 second chance points.
Jermaine Head finished with 18 points, adding five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jordan Harding scored 11 second half points while adding two steals, and Taalib Holloman scored 11 points to go with a team high six rebounds.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday night, when they welcome Chestnut Hill to the Complex for a CACC South Division bout. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
