NEWARK, Del. - - Christian Zwickert, head coach of the Wilmington University men's lacrosse team, now has another team to keep an eye on; the Polish National Team. Zwickert returns to the helm of the Polish National Team ahead of the European Championships next July.
The Polish Lacrosse Federation appointed Zwickert as the head coach of the Polish men's lacrosse team, retaking the reigns he once held from 2008-11. This time, he is bringing on a familiar face, as Zwickert named WilmU assistant coach Ronnie Sanna the offensive coordinator.
The duo will lead the team into the European Championships, which will take place on July 21-30, 2021 in Wroclaw, Poland.
Zwickert has previous National Team experience, not only as a coach, but dating back to his playing days for Team Germany. He competed for Germany at the 1998 World Games in Baltimore, the 1999 European Championships in Manchester, and the 2000 European Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. He led the team to a second place finish in each of the European Championships.
As a coach, he first began as the German National coach in 2001, leading the team its first European Championship with a perfect 6-0 record. More recently, he was the main coach of the Polish national team from 2008-11, the deputy manager from 2008-10, and the manager from 2010-14. The 2010 World Games was Poland's first tournament as a lacrosse team, finishing in 14th place with a 5-3 record.
The Wildcats were off to a 5-0 start in 2020 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In three seasons with the Wildcats, Zwickert has amassed a 17-16 overall record, reaching the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals in each postseason.
