NYACK, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team outshot Nyack but couldn't solve the backline or Warrior goalkeeper Tom Lohman as the Warriors came away with a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.
With both teams battling for position in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings, the Wildcats (10-5-1, 6-4-1 CACC) collected 15 shots while Nyack (8-6-2, 5-4-1 CACC) only managed 13, but was able to score on three opportunities.
The Warriors put a goal on the board right before the halftime break, heading into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Tobias Reissig scored off a free kick with exactly two minute remaining in the first frame, which turned into the game-winner.
After the halftime break, the Wildcats outshot the Warriors 11-6 but Warrior goalkeeper Lohman recorded four saves in second frame to register the shutout. Wilmington also collected six second half corners, but couldn't find the back of the net. In all, Wilmington earned more corners, 8-5, than the Warriors.
Nyack added to the lead in the second half, playing with a man-advantage for the final 40 minutes after a red-card to Wilmington Joe Woodley. The Warriors took advantage of the man-up situation, scoring goals in the 80th and 87th minutes to walk away with the 3-0 victory.
Lohman recorded four stops in the shutout for the Warriors while Frank Hall made one save in the first half for the Wildcats. Spyros Stergiotis came on for the second 45 minutes and made one save as well.
Wilmington remains with 19 points in the CACC and currently sits in a tie for fourth in Concordia. Nyack gained three points for the win and now have 16 on the season and is in a tie for sixth place.
The Wildcats will look to gain momentum for the CACC Tournament with their final regular season contest on Wednesday. The Wildcats travel to Georgian Court for the final game prior to the CACC Tournament, playing against the Lions for the first time in their inaugural season. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
