BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - - In a battle of NSCAA East Regionally ranked opponents, Wilmington University men's soccer blanked Concordia, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Holtdorf Soccer Field.
The Wildcats (6-1, 4-0 CACC), ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA East Regional Rankings, scored a goal in each half, despite being out shot by Concordia (3-2-1, 2-2-1 CACC), 13-9. The Clippers were ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA East Regional Rankings.
The teams traded the first two shots of the game, but it was the Wildcats' second shot that put the Wildcats on the board. Senior Josh Fawssett received a pass down the sideline from Lance Berry and took care of the rest, getting into the box before beating Clipper net minder Ruel Gordon for his third goal of the season.
The Clippers out shot the Wildcats, 6-2, in the remainder of the first half, and senior goalkeeper Frank Hall was called on to make one save in the first 45 minutes to keep the Wildcats lead at the halftime break.
Out of the break, the Wildcats collected the first two shots of the second half before Concordia posted another shot wide of the frame. Second later, the Wildcats marched down the field and added an insurance goal, as Berry crossed a ball into the box to the one-time touch of Jamie Burridge.
Burridge's one-time goal gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at the 58:47 mark and was his second goal of the season.
Hall recorded two saves following the second goal, one minute apart in the 64th and 65th minutes to secure the shutout. It is the team's and Hall's second consecutive shutout, and the third of the season. Hall is now 6-0 in goal for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats earned more corners, 6-3, than the Clippers, while Hall recorded three saves in goal. The Clipper's Gordon made two stops in goal for the match.
The Wildcats remain in the CACC and on the road for their next match, as they head to Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night. The Wildcats and Griffins play under the lights with a 7:00 p.m. start time in Philadelphia.
