Topouzlis, Bell, and Bickley Named to CoSIDA’s 2019 Academic All-District 1 Men’s Soccer Team

NEWARK, Del. - - The 2019 Academic All-District Men's Soccer Teams have been announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to recognize the nation's top student-athletes who perform both on the field and in the classroom.

Wilmington University's men's soccer team had a District 1 high three student-athletes voted to the team, including senior midfielder Dimitrios Topouzlis who was named a Third Team Academic All-American last year. He is joined by senior defender Joe Bell and redshirt junior forward Lorne Bickley on this year's Academic All-District 1 Team.

The Wildcats are the only team in the East Region to have three student-athletes named to the All-District 1 Team, and only one of six programs in the country with three student-athletes. Western Washington University if the only program with four student-athletes for their region.

This is the second year in a row that Dimitrios Topouzlis has been named to the Academic All-District 1 Team. He is carrying a 3.99 cumulative grade point average while studying finance. He is the holding central midfielder and team captain for the 15-1-1 Wildcats, tallying three assists on the season so far while staring all 18 games.

This is the first time in his career that Joe Bell has been named All-Academic, as he is carrying a 3.51 grade point average in his senior season while studying sports management. He leads all defenders in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with seven goals while adding two assists for 16 points as a center back. He also anchors the defense that is only allowing 0.76 goals per game on the year, making all 18 starts this season.

This is also the first time being named All-Academic for Lorne Bickley, as he is currently carrying a 3.50 cumulative grade point average in his fourth year at the University. He is also studying sports management. Bickley leads all of NCAA Division II with 24 goals, setting a new program and CACC single season record. He has also added two assists for a grand total of 50 points heading into the postseason. He has also started in all 18 games for the Wildcats this year.

The 2019 Academic All-District 1 Men's Soccer Team had two other CACC student-athletes voted in as well. Dominican's senior goalkeeper Tyler Doll and Chestnut Hill's senior defender Paris Bruhn also made the list.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. The student-athlete must also have complete one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

The Academic All-District 1 Team is now automatically nominated for Academic All-American status. The Academic All-American Team will be announced on Wednesday, December 4.
