Offense Breaks Out for No. 14 Men’s Soccer, 8-0, over Holy Family

NEWARK, Del. - - The offense came alive for the 14th ranked Wilmington University men's soccer team on Tuesday, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Holy Family, 8-0, at the WU Athletics Complex.

The scoring started just 22 seconds into the match and never stopped for the Wildcats (12-1-1, 6-1 CACC). The Wildcats led 7-0 at the halftime break.

Yohan Kim was taken down in the box just 21 seconds into the match, setting up Shawn Genus for the penalty kick goal and the 1-0 lead in the first minute. Paul Young Jr. made it 2-0 with his first goal as a Wildcat, blasting home a set piece from atop the semicircle outside of the 18-yard box in the 16th minute.

Hakim Williams and Shawn Genus played combination soccer to get into the box, and then Genus laid one off for Hakim in front for an open net goal in the 18th minute. Just two minutes later, Richard Thompson laced an incredible goal from nearly 30 yards out, another free kick opportunity that found the back of the net. He went inside out on the ball, getting the ball around the wall on the inside and scoring to the keeper's left for the 4-0 lead in the 20th minute.

Shawn Genus scored his second of the game in the 29th minute, as Yohan Kim found a 5-0 lead. wide-open Genus at the penalty spot. His first shot was saved and went off the post, but Genus followed it up and tapped it in for his 12th goal of the year and give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats then won a Holy Family goal kick and Marcus Hedemann played it forward to Pol Romero. Romero laid it off for Hedemann who did the rest, sliding one under the goalkeeper for the 6-0 lead in the 32nd minute. The first half scoring ended with a goal from Shoki Yoshida in the 39th minute, as Hedemann played a soft touched through ball into the box and Yoshida's shot went under the hard charging goalkeeper for the 7-0 advantage.

Seeing his first action in his third year as a Wildcat due to injuries and COVID, Arturo Serano capped the scoring in the 59th minute, burying a pass left behind by Shawn Genus at the top of the penalty box.

The Wildcats scored their eight goals on only 16 shots, 12 of which were on goal on Tuesday. They Wildcats also earned more corners, 5-0.

Yvan Moundou relieved Konstantinos Parisis in the second half for the first time all season. Neither goalkeeper was called on to make a stop.

The Wildcats next contest has been pushed up a day, as they will now head to Dominican on Friday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. start.
