Men’s Soccer’s Malthe Hannesbo and Richard Thompson Named CACC Players of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Following a 2-0 week in which the Wilmington University men's soccer team averaged four goals a game, the Wildcats placed two student-athletes on this week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Report, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

Tied atop the team lead with two goals, Malthe Hannesbo (Stovring, Denmark) was named the CACC Rookie of the Week while teammate Richard Thompson (Montego Bay, Jamaica) was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Hannesbo tied for the team lead with two goals last night, both coming in a 5-2 win against Dominican on Saturday. He started the scoring against the Chargers in the seventh minute, getting on the end of a corner kick with a header for his first collegiate career goal and the 1-0 lead. The Wildcats went ahead, 3-0, before the Chargers stormed back, scoring back-to-back goals in the second half to make it 3-2. With the Chargers still pressing Hannesbo leaked through the defense and was in alone on the keeper in the 90th minute, scoring his second of the game to cap the scoring, 5-2.

Thompson assisted on goals in each of the games last week, making it three straight games overall. He assisted on the second goal of a 3-0 win at Chestnut Hill and then assisted on Hannesbo's header in the seventh minute against Dominican. Thompson took the corner, sending it to the back post to find Hannesbo. He now has 13 career assists, moving him into the Top 10 all-time list in program history.

Volleyball's Kacey Affrunti (Bayport, N.Y.) was named to the CACC Honor Roll after leading the Wildcats in averaging 3.0 kills per set and hitting .326 in two matches.
