ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - - Sophomore Annie Davila hit three home runs on Wednesday, two of which came in the nightcap, but Nyack stormed back in game two to split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, 8-0 and 5-4, against the Wilmington University softball team at South Orangetown Little League.
A five-run third inning catapulted the Wildcats (14-10, 2-2 CACC) to a five-inning, 8-0 victory in game one. The Wildcats held a 4-1 lead going into the sixth inning, but Nyack (4-14, 1-3 CACC) fought back to score three in the sixth and walked away with the 5-4 win in the bottom of the seventh.
Rosa'Lynn Burton led the off the doubleheader with a single and two stolen bases, allowing Jazmeen Llamas to hit a sacrifice fly to left to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead two batters into the contest.
Another Burton single and stolen base set up the top of the third inning, as she eventually scored on an error. Makayla McCarthy hit an RBI single before Annie Davila hit the first of three homers on the afternoon, a three-run shot to cap a five-run, third inning for the 6-0 lead.
Alyssa Velasquez drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth and Makayla McCarthy doubled in Lacey Nealy to set the eight-run rule into affect.
Game one starter Caitlyn Whiteside finished off the Warriors with a 1-2-3 fifth inning, moving to 7-4 on the year with the complete game shutout. She struck out five batters without allowing a walk and only giving up four hits.
The Wildcats got off to a good start in the nightcap, getting a jump off the bat from Annie Davila once again. With one out in the second, Davila hit a solo shot, her second of the day, to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple, but the Wildcats had an answer in the top of the fourth. It was up to Annie Davila once again, she stepped up and belted a three-run blast with one out, scoring Alyssa Velasquez and Makayla McCarthy for the 4-1 lead.
Game two starter Makayla McCarthy set the Warriors down in order in the fifth, but the home team got to the freshman in the sixth. With runners on second and third, an RBI single brought the game to 4-2. But a two-out, two-run homer tied the game one batter later.
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two outs, but Nyack got out of the jam with a strikeout to keep the game tied. The Warriors started the seventh with a leadoff double, but McCarthy was able to get the next two batters out. The third out wasn't as easy to come by, however, as the Warriors hit an RBI single to walk-off with the win, 5-4.
Annie Davila went 3-for-5 with three homers, seven RBI, and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Burton went 3-for-4 in game one and 1-for-3 in the nightcap.
The Wildcats remain in CACC play with their next doubleheader, making up a twinbill with Chestnut Hill on Friday in Philadelphia. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
