Makayla McCarthy named CACC Softball Co-Player and Rookie of the Week

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - With the Wilmington University softball team preparing for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, freshman Makayla McCarthy has once again been recognized by the conference office, being named the Co-Player and Rookie of the Week on Monday.

It is the fifth time this season McCarthy (El Cajon, Calif./Steele Canyon) has been named the CACC Rookie of the Week, while earning a piece of the CACC Player of the Week for the first time this year.

McCarthy led the Wildcats to a 4-2 record least week, hitting .438 by going 7-for-16 with two homers, a double, and a triple, 10 RBI, and three runs scored. She tallied a 1.000 slugging percentage while reaching base on half of her plate appearances.

Her first collegiate home run came at Georgian Court in the opener, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. McCarthy also went 2-for-3 with another two-run homer in game two. She finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI in game one against Post. Her lone triple of the week came in game two against Kutztown where she went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

McCarthy also started three games in the circle for the Wildcats, making four appearances. She went 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA on the week, striking out 36 batters in 21.1 innings pitched. She struck out 10 Golden Bears in a 3-0 win against Kutztown, before striking gout 10 more Lions in a 12-3, five-inning victory at Georgian Court. She then tied her season high with 14 strikeouts in a 5-3 victory against Post on Saturday.

Baseball's Kendal Small was named to the sport's Weekly Honor after leading the Wildcats to a 4-3 week, batting .481 (13-for-27) with two homers, 10 RBI, and a .704 slugging percentage.
