NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Caitlyn Whiteside tossed a complete game shutout as the Wilmington University softball team collected double-digit hits in each game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep over Nyack, 5-0 and 12-4 (6), on Tuesday at Asbury Field.

Game One:

Caitlyn Whiteside threw a complete game three-hit shutout in the opener, improving to 15-8 on the year while striking out five and only allowing one walk.

She allowed a one-out single in the first, but picked up a 1-6-3 double play to get out unscathed. Whiteside then left two runners on base in the second, and had two runners on with one out in the third before retiring the final two batters of the inning. She then went in order the rest of the game, retiring the final 14 batters in a row for the shutout.

The offense mashed out 14 hits in the game, but didn't get on the board until the third inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Kiana Broaderson-Jones started a rally with a double to left center. Alyssa Velasquez then gave the Wildcats the lead with a single into left, easily plating Broderson-Jones.

Makayla McCarthy walked to start the fourth inning and Annie Davila quickly made it a 3-0 game with her fifth home run of the season, lifting one to left field.

Lauren Lopez started the fifth with a leadoff double and McCarthy gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead with a double over the head of the center fielder. The Wildcats loaded the bases in the inning and Rosa'Lynn Burton worked a two-out walk to force in another run, giving the Wildcats a 5-0 advantage.

Alyssa Velasquez went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Lopez, McCarthy, and Davila all had two hits in the game. Davila led the way with two RBI in the contest.

Burton also broke her own mark of stolen bases in a season, now with 46 after game one, breaking her mark of 45 set in 2017.

Game Two:

It didn't take as long for the Wildcats to get on the board in game two, as they once again collected double digit hits with 15. Rosa'Lynn Burton, Annie Davila, and Kiersten Comer all finished with three hits each, with Davila leading the way with four RBI. The Wildcats had 15 hits in the nightcap.

With a hit in game one and three hits in game two, Rosa'Lynn Burton extended her hitting streak to 23 straight. It is the longest hitting streak of her career and now two shy of the program record of 25 set by Brook Ash in 2013.

The scoring started in the bottom of the first, as Burton singles, stole second, and was standing on third with one out. Kiana Broderson-Jones gave the Wildcats the lead with an RBI single back up the middle. Broderson-Jones then stole second and easily came around on a Annie Davila single past the shortstop and into center.

The Warriors (14-25, 11-11 CACC) cut the lead in half in the top of the second, but the Wildcats regained momentum with a bases loaded walk and a bases clearing double to left center by Annie Davila.

Nyack continued to keep the pressure on with two runs in the fourth and another run in the top of the sixth, bringing the Wildcats' lead to 6-4.

But the Wildcats finished off the Warriors in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on five hits. Burton and Velasquez started the inning with back-to-back doubles for the first run. A dropped fly ball in left brought in a run before Lexi Baughman gave the Wildcats a 10-4 lead with a two-run double. Kiersten Comer kept the inning going with an RBI double to right center before coming around with the walk-off run as Alexis Sann singled into left center.

Makayala McCarthy improved to 14-4 on the season with the win, striking out seven while allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. She also allowed three walks in the win.
