Mike Shehorn was named the head coach of the softball program in August 2013 and begins his 11th season at the helm of the Wildcats in 2024. In 10 seasons as the head coach of the Wildcats, Shehorn is the all-time winningest coach in program history with a 307-181 overall record and 173-57 inside the CACC.

Shehorn took the program to new heights in 2023, advancing to its first-ever NCAA DII National Tournament after defeating No. 1 Adelphi, 2-1, in the East Super Regional series in Garden City, New York. The Wildcats won the CACC Regular Season title for the first time in program record with a 21-3 mark, and came out of the loser's bracket to win the CACC Tournament for the fourth time in program history. They were awarded the No. 2 seed and hosting duties for the NCAA DII East Region 2 Tournament, sweeping the three games to earn a revenge series with Adelphi in the Super Regionals. They defeated Adelphi, 10-1, in game one, but needed a third game to decide the series, winning, 3-1, to be one of the final eight teams in the country remaining in the NCAA National Tournament. The Wildcats were eliminated with losses to Grand Valley State and CSU San Marcos. Shehorn and his staff were named the ATEC/NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year for their efforts.

From 2014-19, Shehorn led the Wildcats to an unprecedented six-year stretch, winning three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships while reaching the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament in five out of the six seasons. After missing in 2018, his team returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2019, this time becoming the first Wilmington team outside of golf to host an NCAA Regional Tournament.

The 2022 season was another unprecedented one for Shehorn and the Wildcats as they reached the NCAA East Ruper Regional for the first time in program history. The Wildcats entered the NCAA East Region 2 Tournament as the No. 3 seed and defeated Franklin Pierce, 3-2, and then Georgian Court twice, 2-1, and 4-1, on their home field to win the sub-regional. The Wildcats then defeated Adelphi, 1-0, in the first game of the Super Regional, but fell in back-to-back games to lose the best of three, being one game away from their first trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

In 2019, Shehorn led the Wildcats to a 39-15 overall record, going 22-4 in CACC to earn the No. 2 seed. But the Wildcats needed to come out of the loser's bracket and did just that on the final day, winning three games to claim their third CACC Tournament Championship since 2014 with a 5-4 victory in 9 innings against Georgian Court. They then earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA East Regional Tournament and the chance to host the NCAA Division II East 2 Regional Tournament at Asbury Field.

In 2017, the Wildcats came up empty in the CACC Tournament as the fourth seed, but kept their postseason alive with a strong regular season schedule and earned the eighth and final spot into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament for the fourth straight year. The Wildcats dropped their first contest against top-seeded and host Adelphi, but roared back to defeat New Haven and Mercy to reach the East Regional 1 final for the first time in program history. Their run came to an end against top-seeded and host Adelphi once again, ending the year, 36-21 overall, making it the third straight year with 30+ victories.

in 2016, Shehorn got the team off to a hot start in CACC play, starting conference play with a 17-1 mark. The Wildcats finished third in the standings to earn the number three seed for the CACC Tournament with a 20-6 CACC record. The Wildcats marched through the CACC Tournament with a 4-0 mark, winning a pair of 1-0 games including the CACC Tournament Championship game over Holy Family. The win gave the Wildcats the CACC’s automatic qualification, making it three years in a row in which the team reached the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

In 2015, Shehorn again led the Wildcats into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament, earning the program’s first at-large bid and earning the fifth seed. The Wildcats went 34-18 overall in 2015, earning the third seed for the CACC Tournament before going 2-2. The Wildcats then went 1-2 in the East Regional Tournament. Shehorn coached senior pitcher Chelsea Botsch to All-American status, also coaching three players to All-Regional honors.

Shehorn led the Wildcats to their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship in program history in his first season, earning the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament in 2014. The Wildcats finished the season 29-26 overall, 16-10 in the CACC, earning the fifth seed for the CACC Tournament. The Wildcats went 1-2 in the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament, defeating New Haven before being eliminated.

Previously, Shehorn spent the 2013 season on staff as a volunteer assistant, helping the team to a then program-best 34-20 record, as well as a program-record 19 wins in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The team earned the third seed for the CACC Tournament, going 2-2 with wins over Holy Family and USciences.

Prior to working as an assistant last season, Shehorn was the head softball coach at Caesar Rodney High School in Dover, Del., starting with the 2005 season. During his eight seasons at Caesar Rodney, Shehorn led his teams to a 93-70 overall record and two appearances in the Delaware State Semifinals. He was also named the state Coach of the Year in 2006.

Shehorn resides in Magnolia, Delaware with his wife Nicole and daughter, Skye.
