WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - - The Wilmington University track and field teams competed at the historic 54th Annual Colonial Relays this past weekend, hosted by the College of William & Mary at Zable Stadium.
The Wildcats were able to take in the atmosphere of the more historic meets across the country, including 54 women's teams and 52 men's teams in attendance covering all three NCAA Divisions as well as the NAIA and NJCAA.
The University of Delaware women's team took home the team championship for the second year in a row with 79.75 points, follow by William & Mary in second with 70 points. Bucknell (62 pts), UMass Lowell (58.75 pts), and James Madison (55 pts) round out the top five on the women's side.
The host Tribe won the men's competition with 74 points, followed by Bucknell in second with 69 points. Saint Francis (60 pts), Mount Olive (52 pts), and Shippensburg (46 pts) round out the top five on the men's side.
Mark Corrgian had his best performance of the year in the 5,000-meter run, coming in 16th out of 36 in the University race with a time of 15:23.71, almost a minute faster than his time two weeks ago.
The men also competed in three new events at the Colonial Relays, running in the 4x200 meter relay, the 1600-meter medley relay, and the distance medley relay races.
Dyonne Hicks set a new season record for the women in the 100-meter sprint, crossing the line in 13.35 seconds to come in 54th in the Championship division. Grace Slate also set a new season's best in the 400-meter event, running the lap in 1:04.73, nearly six seconds faster than the previous mark set last week.
Rosemary Gillam ran the fastest 800-meter race of the year so far, crossing the line with a time of 2:30.30, more than two seconds faster than Slate last week. The 4x400-meter relay team improved once again, this time as Dyonne Hicks, Gabby Brown, Julia Merritt, and Grace Slate finished in 4:24.03, nearly nine seconds faster than last week as well.
Hicks also leaped to her second best distance of the year in the triple jump, landing at 10.50 meters to finish in 18th overall. Her first jump of the year is still her best, 10.61 meters, at the Maryland Invitational.
The Wildcats take a trip to New Jersey for their next meet, as they will compete in the Rider Invitational on Saturday. The one-day event will take place at the Michael P. Brady Track & Field Complex in Lawrenceville, N.J., hosted by Rider University.
