BETHLEHEM, Pa. - - The Wilmington University track and field team won three events at the Coach P. Invitational on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Moravian College.
The men claimed the top two spots in the 100 and 200-meter events, and won the hammer throw by nearly two-meters. The men also placed second in two other events while the women had a second-place finisher in the 3,000-meter event.
Matthew Hibbert out-ran teammate Tyler Levons for both the 100 and 200 titles on Saturday, both setting personal records in each event. Hibbert won the 100-meter event in 11.14 seconds while Levons finished second in 11.28 seconds. Hibbert than came out and won the 200-meter race in 22.66 while Levons finished seconds in 22.88 seconds.
Jimmy Keenan also advanced to the finals in the 100-meter, racing to a fifth-place finish with a time of 11.98 seconds.
In the field events, Joshua Varghese was all over the podium on Saturday, beating nine others to win the hammer throw with a toss of 47.74 meters to break his own school record set earlier this year. He also finished second of nine throwers in the shot put with a distance of 13.00 meters while rounding out his day with a third-place finish in the discus, with a toss of 41.59 meters.
Mitchell Coll set a new school record in the javelin throw, besting his distance from last week by more than a meter. He placed fifth overall with a throw of 40.90 meters.
Devin Valenzuela placed fourth in the 1,500-meter event with a time of 4:21.46 while Daniel Wyshinski finished second in the 5,000-meter event with a new personal best 16:06.77.
On the women's side, Yailynn Ramirez finished second while running in the 5,000-meter event for the first time this year, racing to a school record 20:20.94. Alexa Crowell was nearly two minutes faster than her own time last week, coming in fourth with a time of 20:56.06.
Viviana Caamano improved in all four field events, finishing fourth in the shot put with a distance of 8.24 meters (7.96 last week), fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 28.27 meters (26.09 last week), fifth in the discus with a throw of 22.83 meters (19.14 last week), and eighth in the javelin with a distance of 18.44 meters (10.94 last week).
Lina Boussif also improved in the hammer throw, tossing it a distance of 16.45 meters, up from 14.47 meters last week. Boussif also finished eighth in the 100-meter even with a time of 14.60 seconds while finishing 13th overall in the 200-meter with a time of 30.77 seconds.
The Wildcats return to the track next weekend when they head to the Paul Kiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University on Saturday afternoon.
