Women’s Track and Field Finishes Program Best Fourth Overall at CACC Championships

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University women's track & field team has its best finish at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship in program history with a fourth-place standing (78 points) this weekend at the 2023 postseason event.

The Wildcats continue to improve yearly by producing their best result since their inaugural season in 2019. The Wildcats scored 59 points in 2019, 35 in 2021, and 15 in 2022.

On Saturday, the Wildcats were highlighted by two podium finishes. The 2021 CACC Champion in the 10,000-meter run, Alexa Crowell, finishes this year's event in second place. Crowell finished with a time of 41:25.12. 

In addition, Vivianna Caamano broke the school record in the hammer throw and landed on the podium. Caamano finished third overall with a best toss of 42.57 meters. Also, in the hammer throw, Freja Olofsson and Jada Obegi placed back-to-back in fifth and sixth place.

Alexa Crowell and Freja Olofsson highlight the Wildcats as the only first-place finishers at this year's championships. Crowell runs half the distance as she did on Saturday in the 5,000-meter run and finishes first overall with a time of 19:31.39. Freshmen Freja Olofsson tops the discus field in a close battle for first place. Olofsson's best toss of 39.15 meters won the field. 

Temi Mustapha scored four points in the 100-meter dash. Mustapha finished fifth overall in this year's championships with a time of 12.81 seconds. Mustapha also had a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, with an 11.19-meter leap, a personal best.

Yailynn Ramirez finished seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.81, scoring two points.

Tiffany Banning rounded out her impressive freshmen season campaign with two fifth-place finishes in both the 1,500-meter run and 5,000-meter run.

Layla Hunt and Kharonay Brown placed in the 100-meter hurdles after qualifying in the prelims yesterday. Hunt finished fifth overall with a time of 15.61 seconds, and Brown finished in seventh with a time of 15.82 seconds. Hunt also finished fifth overall in the 400-meter hurdles, with a finishing time of 1:07.69.

Freshmen Jada Obegi set a personal best and extended her school record distance in the shot put with a toss of 11.49 meters. Obegi finished sixth overall. Freshmen Abby Chomo made finals in the javelin throw with a best toss of 28.63 meters.

The relay team for the 4x400, made up of Temi Mustapha, Layla Hunt, Kharonay Brown, and Jalah Turner, finished third overall in the final event of the championships. The team finished with a time of 4:10.55.

All first and second place finishers earn All-CACC honors.

Felician won its first Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 231 points. Holy Family finished second with 163 points while Georgian Court was third with 110 points.
