MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - - A select few individuals from the Wilmington University track & field program competed in back-to-back meets at the University of Mount Olive (Mount Olive First Chance and Last Chance Meet) at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
Men:
Akeel Blake focused on the long jump on both days at Mount Olive. On Saturday, Akeel placed second out of a field of nine athletes. Blake's best leap on Saturday was 7.19 meters. Juan Fountain competed for Wilmington on Sunday in the long jump, finishing ninth overall with a best jump of 6.34 meters. On Sunday, Blake's fourth out of his six jumps was his best mark at 7.14 meters. Akeel Blake's best season mark came in at the Towson Open with a provisional mark of 7.49 meters. Blake currently ranks tied for 21st in all of Division II.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Tyler Levons, Bradley Spencer, Matt Hibbert, and Taff Bunu recorded the season's best time, which means the best time in program history at 41.06 seconds. On Sunday, the same relay team finished fourth overall with a time of 41.27 seconds.
Joshua Varghese finished sixth overall in the discus throw at 42.25 meters on Saturday. Christian Dollard hit a personal best mark of 40.13 meters to finish ninth overall. Varghese threw a seasonal best on Saturday with a toss of 47.76 meters in the hammer throw.
Women:
Temi Mustapha recorded her seasonal best time in the 100-meter dash on Saturday. Mustapha clocked a time of 12.45 seconds to finish 13th overall. Jalah Turner also finished with a seasonal best time in the 100-meter dash time with a 12.84-second finishing time.
Kharonay Brown found her way into the record books in the 400-meter dash. Brown became the first Wildcat to clock a sub-one minute 400-meter time of 59.82 seconds.
Layla Hunt improves on her 100-meter hurdle time, which also marks a new record. Hunt broke her own record with a time of 15.33 seconds. Hunt also broke her own school record in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday. Hunt finished sixth overall time of 105.74.
Jada Obegi improved at best in the shot put, which also means a new school record. Obegi finished second overall with a toss of 11.79 meters. Freja Olofsson finished seventh overall in the discus throw on Saturday with a toss of 35.59 meters.
On Saturday, Jada Obegi improved her hammer throw mark for the season with a toss of 38.71 meters. On Sunday, Viviana Caamano finished with a throw over 40 meters and a toss of 40.91.
