The University of the Sciences' Brianne Traub led the Devils to an 88-62 over the Wilmington University women's basketball team by posting a double-double in both team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season opener on Tuesday night in Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Devils (1-2, 1-0 CACC) sprinted out to a quick 10-point lead with 12:50 remaining in the first half, using nine three-pointers to carry a 52-30 lead into the halftime break.
USciences' Traub gave the home team its largest lead of the game, 62-32, with 14:23 remaining in regulation before Megan Wolf tied that mark with a layup with 13:49 showing on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats (0-5, 0-1 CACC) cut into the lead late in the second half as Jasmine Lee put home a pair of layups to cut the deficit to 22 points on a pair of occasions. Tenicia Spence sank a pair of free throws with 3:52 to play to bring the Wildcats to within 78-57, but it was too little too late as the Devils kept he Wildcats at an arms' reach for the 88-62 victory.
The Devils shot 50.8 percent from the floor for the game, hitting 32-of-63 shots overall, while the Wildcats shot 25.7 percent for the game, hitting 18-of-70 shots. USciences caught fire from deep in the first half, hitting 9-of-18 from beyond the arc in the first half and 10-of-26 for the game.
Lee paced the Wildcats with 12 points off the bench, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor while grabbing a team high six rebounds. Spence and Patricia Miranda added eight points each while Jocelyn Rodriguez and Taylor Carter chipped in with seven points each.
Traub led the Devils with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Jessica Sylvester added 13 points and Sarah Abbonizio contributed 11 in the victory.
The Wildcats participate in the Chick-Fil-A Classic this weekend hosted by Virginia State. The Wildcats open the invitational with Elizabeth City State on Friday before facing Virginia State on Saturday. Friday's contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip.
