The Wilmington University women's basketball team scored a season low 44 points in a 74-44 loss at NCAA Division I Delaware State on Wednesday night at Memorial Hall.
Coming off a five-point victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Georgian Court on Tuesday night, the Wildcats (4-13) fell flat against the Hornets (3-11) in the cross-divisional and instate contest.
The Wildcats shot 17-of-59 from the floor for the contest while the Hornets came out and hit 30-of-59 from the floor for the game. The Wildcats committed the fewest turnovers (12) of the season however, while also picking up five steals on the night.
Junior Tenicia Spence led the team with 11 points while shooting 5-of-13 from the floor. Sophomore Jasmine Lee tallied double figures as well, scoring 10 points off the bench while also grabbing three rebounds. Jennifer Carr carried the team with seven rebounds, six of which came on the defensive glass.
The Hornets started fast with an 8-0 run out of the gates and took their first double digit lead following a Aliah Stinnett jumper with 12:10 left to play in the first half. An 11-0 run pushed the Hornet lead to 34-13 with 2:45 to play before the break. Delaware State carried a 37-19 lead going into the halftime break.
The Hornets continued to stretch the lead in the second half, taking as large as a 74-40 lead with 2:49 to play following a Nateyah McLeod jumper. The Wildcats' Auryonah Nash made back-to-back jumpers to settle on the final score, 74-44.
Delaware State's Tierra Hawkins led the Hornets with a double-double, scoring 28 points and 13 rebounds while also coming up with three blocks. Mikah Aldridge added 16 points while Amber Bogard tallied 12 points and six rebounds for the home team.
The Hornets scored 17 points off the 12 Wilmington turnovers and held a large advantage on points in the paint, 48-16. The Wildcats grabbed 14 offensive rebounds in the contest but the Hornets held a slim, 17-11, advantage in second chance points.
The Wildcats are off for a full week before they return to CACC South Division action. The women host Holy Family in the nightcap of a doubleheader at the WU Athletics Complex on January 21 at approximately 8 p.m.
