LaShyra Williams and Tyaire Ponzo-Meek Named CACC Co-Players of the Week for Wilmington Basketball

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A pair of Wildcats were named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Co-Players of the Week after leading the men's and women's basketball teams to a perfect 4-0 week with sweeps over Georgian Court and Nyack.

Junior guard LaShyra Williams picked up her third CACC Player of the Week award in leading the women's team to wins over Georgian Court and Nyack while senior guard Tyaire Ponzo-Meek led the men's basketball team to a pair of wins to pick up his third CACC Player of the Week award as well.

Williams (Seaford, Del./Seaford) scored a team-high 25 points on 7-of-16 shooting against Georgian Court on Wednesday night, going 10-of-11 from the foul line as well. The junior also grabbed five rebounds while dishing out four assists, grabbing three steals, and picking up two blocked shots against the Lions. She added a game-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting against Nyack on Saturday, grabbing eight rebounds while dishing out four assists in the Wildcats' win.

She shot 53.8 percent from the floor for the week, adding 16-of-19 from the foul line, for a team high 23 points per game. Williams also averaged 6.5 rebounds, four assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks in the two games. She is now sixth in the CACC in scoring 15.9 points per game.

Williams shares the weekly award with Bloomfield's Tianna Smith while Concordia's Amiya Rankins earned this week's Rookie of the Week award. Rankins teammate Hadiyah Black was named the Defensive Player of the Week as well.

On the men's side, Ponzo-Meek needed few shots to score 25 or more points in each game last week, starting with a 9-for-12 performance for 26 points against Georgian Court. Seven of his field goals were from long distance, as he finished 7-for-8 from three-point territory. He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists in the victory. The senior remained red hot for Saturday's game, shooting 11-of-12 from the floor for 31 points, hitting 4-of-5 from three-point land. The bulk of his stats (27 points) came in the first half alone, as he then fed other players and finished with five assists and six rebounds in the win.

Ponzo-Meek shot an astounding 83.3 percent from the floor for the week (20-of-24), including an absurd 84.6 percent from three-point range (11-of-13). He averaged 28.5 points, five rebounds, and four assists in two games last week. He is now third in the CACC in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game.

Ponzo-Meek shares the weekly award with Holy Family's Dyllon Hudson-Emory while he also claimed this week's Defensive Player of the Week. His Tigers' teammate Randy Bell was named the CACC Rookie of the week as well.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday night when they host Holy Family for a doubleheader starting at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
