NEWARK, Del. – With a hot second and third quarter from Chestnut Hill, the Wilmington University women's basketball team could not find any momentum, as the Griffins outpaced the Wildcats, 92-62, Tuesday night in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Griffins (4-12, 2-6 CACC) shot 70.6 percent from the floor in the third quarter, making 6-10 three-pointers, as the Wildcats (3-13, 3-5 CACC) shot 38.5 percent from the floor in the quarter.
It was a 8-8 game with 5:34 to play in the first quarter, as WilmU got out to a 8-4 run to take a 16-12 lead with just under three minutes to play, but Chestnut Hill would answer with a 9-0 run to finish the quarter, 21-18 in the visitor's favor.
Just 42 seconds into the second quarter, Emily Ansah ties the contest 21-21 on a made free throw. Chestnut Hill would then start a 15-0 run off of three back-to-back layups, followed by two three pointers to bring the game to a 12-point lead, 35-23, with 5:21 to go before the half. Jaelyn Durrett would knock down a three-pointer for the Wildcats to make it an eight point game of 38-30 before Nyree Grant closed it to seven points on a made free throw with 3:10 to play in the second half.
The Griffins would get six more points off of made layups, before Grant could end the half with her own layup to bring the score within 11 points, 44-33.
The Griffins came out in the second half with the same momentum, as they got out to a 7-2 run in the opening minutes. Jaelyn Durrett would make back-to-back threes for the Wildcats with 5:42 to play in the third, but Chestnut Hill would answer right back on a made layup and three-pointer to take a 58-41 lead. Jadyn Whitsitt would hit two foul shots with 4:05 play, but the Wildcats could not find the back of the net until Nyree Grant's layup with 1:04 to play in the quarter. The Griffins would end the quarter 30-14.
The Griffins would continue their lead into the fourth quarter, going on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 79-47, with 7:59 to play in the game. WilmU would cut it to 88-60 with just three minutes to play, but the Griffins would end the game, 92-62, to take their fourth win of the season.
Nyree Grant led the Wildcats with a team-high of 15 points and six rebounds, as Jadyn Whitsitt and Kiara Eubanks netted 10 points each. Jaelyn Durrett went 3-4 from deep for nine points.
The Griffins had five players in double figures, as they shot 55 percent from the floor for the night.
The Wildcats' next contest is this Saturday, as they head to Post University in a cross-divisional matchup. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
