NEWARK, Del – A 26-8 third quarter run by Holy Family would help cap off a 76-58 win over the Wilmington University women's basketball team in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Holy Family (4-3, 2-0 CACC) would jump out to a nine-point lead to begin the game, making three consecutive three-pointers and a layup to go up 11-2 over the Wildcats (0-8, 0-2 CACC), forcing them into their first timeout with 7:21 to play in the quarter. The Tigers would lead as large as 14 in the quarter, before taking a 29-16 lead into the second quarter.
The Wildcats would score three points to bring the lead to 31-19, but neither team would find the back of the net until 2:27 later thanks to an Emily Ansah layup that would start a 7-0 run. A three-pointer by Jonna Maddox and a layup from Sabreen Muslim put the Wildcats down just five with 3:27 until halftime forcing the Tigers into their first timeout of the game. Out of the timeout Holy Family would sink back-to-back threes, before Tiffany Jackson brought it back to a nine point game, 37-28 to head into the half.
The Tigers would continue their run to start the second half, going on a 14-2 run to increase their lead to 51-30, forcing WilmU into another timeout with 3:28 left in the third quarter. Wilmington would not score for a total of 4:04 until Kiara Eubanks made a jump shot. Holy Family would end on an 11-7 run in the quarter to jump out to a 63-36 lead to begin the fourth.
Opening the final quarter of play, the Wildcats would find some momentum and go on a 10-0 run, as a Kasha Andrews jump shot would force the Tigers into a timeout, with the deficit now at 21. Jadyn Whitsitt would knock down a three-pointer to make it a 68-49 ballgame with 4:09 to play, before Emily Ansah made a fast-break layup to cut it to within 17 with 1:22 left in regulation. The Wildcats would outscore the Tigers in the final quarter, 22-13, but Holy Family would come out on top with the 76-58 win.
Holy Family would hit 12 three-pointers in the contest, compared to just two by the Wildcats. Jadyn Whitsitt led WilmU with a team-high 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Tiffany Jackson and Emily Ansah would finish with nine each, along with six rebounds from Jackson and five from Ansah. Sophomore Kiara Eubanks would add eight points and six rebounds.
Wilmington will have a week off before their next matchup, when they head to Millersville on Monday, December 16. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
