Goldey-Beacom Uses Late Second Quarter Run to Defeat Women’s Basketball in Season Finale

WILMINGTON, Del. - - Goldey-Beacom's high scoring offense led to a 90-68 victory in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action over the Wilmington University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center.

This game marks the final game for the Wildcats' (1-22, 1-17 CACC) 2022 campaign. The Wildcats will lose only one player to graduation in senior Sabreen Muslim.

The first period was led by junior Emily Ansah who controlled the glass early and often. Ansah started off the contest with an offensive rebound after her shot, then converted on a layup at 8:48. Two possessions later the Wildcats are awarded yet again by second-chance efforts. Freshman Jade Roberts grabbed an offensive board and then was able to find Ansah for a layup at 7:03.

The 'Cats were down at the most of six points in the first quarter. They were able to turn it around after a jump shot from Muslim off of an assist from sophomore Tanasia Miles at 3:31. Freshman Amaja Mack had the Wildcats within three points with a made lay-in off of an assist from Roberts. Then a made layup and a made free throw by Ansah in back-to-back possessions closed the deficit to only two points with under two minutes to play in the first. The Wildcats would end the first period down 18-14.

Start of the second quarter, Muslim was able to connect on the Wildcat's first field goal of the period, thanks again to a second-chance effort by grabbing an offensive board and laying it in with 7:40 left in the period. The next possession was led by freshman guards Mack and Roberts, as Roberts was able to find Mack open for a jump shot, closing the deficit to within four points with 6:48 left to play. The Wildcats came to as close as one point down in the second, after a made layup by Muslim with under three minutes left in the half. The Wildcats fall to a 17-2 run with three minutes left in the first half, which had the Lightening going into the locker room with a 45-29 score lead.

To start the second half Amaja Mack connected on a jumper, from a find by Ansah. Jade Roberts was able to bring some energy on the defensive end by registering a steal at 7:35. Sophomore Layla Hunt joined the offensive of rebound efforts made by the 'Cats and was able to turn it into two points with a made layup at 7:27. A couple of possessions later Miles connects from beyond the arc for three points off of an assist from Roberts. Freshman guard Skylar Parris scores the next basket from a find from Miles at 5:16. The 'Cats end the third period with a last-second layup by Ansah from Hunt.

Senior Sabreen Muslim left it all out there on the court in her final period of collegiate basketball. Scoring nine points and grabbing five rebounds in the period alone. She finished her career as a Wildcat with 523 total points, 337 rebounds, 27 steals, and 27 assists in two playing seasons.

For one final time, Sabreen Muslim led the way for the Wildcats with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Emily Ansah was not too far behind with 15 points and 16 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Freshman Jade Roberts ended her freshman season on a strong note with 12 points, eight assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
