Women’s Bowling Earns Program’s First Victory During Baker Matches at Red Flash Invitational

ALTOONA, Pa. - - Following a long layoff, the Wilmington University women's bowling team was back in action on Friday afternoon, picking up the program's first ever victory during the baker matches at the Red Flash Invitational hosted by St. Francis (Pa.) at the Holiday Bowl.

In a Baker Format game, a bowler and teammate will bowl toward one score. That is, the entire team combined to bowl 10 frames against each opponent, going 1-3 overall on the day. The Wildcats averaged a score of 682.4 in the five baker matches, with the team holding one bye round throughout the afternoon.

The afternoon started with a match against the host Red Flash, with the Wildcats falling 918-652 in the five baker game format. The Wildcats bowled a team best 154 in the third game against St. Francis.

After a bye round in which the team bowled a 694, the Wildcats continued to gain momentum and get better as the day went one, bowling a day's high 744 in a victory over Thiel University in the third match. The Wildcats won 744-638 while bowling a matches' best 169 in the third game. The Wildcats won four of the five games against Theil.

The Wildcats fell to New Jersey City University, 747-624, while bowling a match best 133 in the first and fifth games, before falling to Norfolk State, 869-698, in the final match of the day. The Wildcats bowled a day's best 181 in the first game against Norfolk State, but the Spartans still came away with the 208-181 win in the baker game.

Adelphi leads the field of 17 teams with a total of 4,857 pins in five matches. Caldwell (4,419), St. Francis (4,408), Felician (4,379), and Duquesne (4,367) round out the top five following the baker matches at the Red Flash Invitational.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday with the second day of the Red Flash Invitational, as they will play five traditional matches against four different opponents. The Wildcats will square off against Penn State Altoona, St. Francis (N.Y.), Morgan State, and Pittsburgh-Bradford, throughout the day.
