Women’s Bowling Finishes Ninth at James Brown Invitational With Two Wins in Bracket Play

TOWSON, Md. - - The Wilmington University bowling team won two bracket matches on Sunday to finish in ninth place at the James Brown Invitational over the weekend, hosted by Morgan State at the AMF Towson Lanes.

The Wildcats were in 10th place after both the Baker Matches and Traditional Matches on Friday and Saturday, respectively. After falling in the first Baker Bracket Match on Sunday, the Wildcats bounced back with a pair of victories to claim ninth overall out of 15 schools at the James Brown Invitational.

A new Baker Match record highlighted Friday afternoon, as they picked up their lone win of the day against Chestnut Hill, 951-940. The score is a new Baker Match high school for the Wildcats in their second year of existence. They went 1-3 on the day with a first round bye. They finished 10th overall with a 171.8 per game average.

Rachel Hirst led the Wildcats in five traditional matches on Saturday, bowling with a 197.6 average while the team went 3-2 overall. The team defeated Virginia State, Monmouth, and Youngstown State, while falling to Howard and Mount Aloysius.

The win against Monmouth was another team record for the Wildcats, setting a new team high score with a 955. The win over Monmouth was Monmouth's lone loss in the first two days of the tournament, as they went into Sunday in second place. The Wildcats defeated Monmouth, 955-901. With 4,392 total pins, the Wildcats stayed in 10th with a two-day total of 8,687 pins and a 173.7 average.

Hirst had a day's high 227 against Monmouth, earning a spot on the Second Team All-Tournament with 988 total pins and a197.6 average. She also posted scores of 225 against Mount Aloysius and 190 against Howard.

Baily Peters was second on the team with 175.0 average, posting a day's best 207 against Mount Aloysius. Clare Chaffer had a 208 match against Youngstown State and finished third on the team with a 170.8 average. Malia Stout had a day's high 203 against Youngstown State, posting a 170.4 average to finish fourth on the squad. Sinoda Cook bowled a 197 against Virginia State, finishing fifth on the team with a 164.6 per game average.

On Sunday, the team started with a 4-2 loss to Youngstown State, winning games four and five to force a sixth match. They came back with a sweep of Mount Aloysius, 4-0, and then placed ninth with a 4-1 victory over Howard, after dropping the first match.

The Wildcats have one more tournament in the regular season, as they head to the Molloy College Lion Invitational next weekend. The two-day tournament will start on Saturday, February 24, at the AMF Plainview Lanes in Plainview, N.Y.
