FREDERICK, Md. - - Despite losing a pair of Baker matches and its final bracket match of the day, the Wilmington University women's bowling team was still impressive at the Mount Shootout, finishing with its best team finish in as large a field, placing third overall at the Terrace Lanes.

The day started with a pair of Baker matches, with the Wildcats losing 0-2, but by a combined three pins in the two matches. They fell to Coppin State but a single pin, 886-885, and then dropped the final match to No. 20 Duquesne, 996-994.

But their performances throughout the two days allowed the Wildcats to qualify fourth for bracket play. They were paired up with the top team in the tournament and No. 23 Youngstown State in the first round.

The Wildcats dropped the first three games of the match but then stayed alive with a 186-163 victory in game four. But the comeback magic was not in the cards against the Penguins, as they closed out the match with a 193-152 win in game five. Youngstown State went on to beat Duquesne to win the tournament.

They then squared off with a tough in-state battle, facing 15th ranked Delaware State in a 3-4 matchup.

The matchup started slowly for the Wildcats, dropping the first two games, 168-148 and 180-167. But the team then got back into the mix with the third game, winning 215-183. The Wildcats then had their best game of the match with 217 pins, but the Hornets held them off to go up, 3-1, 223-217. Now with their backs against the wall, The Wildcats won game five, 211-193, and then tied the match, 3-3, with a 200-179 win. The Wildcats completed the comeback and took down No. 15 Delaware State with a 182-154 win in game seven and earn a spot on the podium.

The Wildcats have an off week before returning to action in the beginning of November. They head to the Virginia Union Invitational in Glen Allen, Virginia, for their first three-day tournament of the season. They will begin bowling on Friday, November 1, at the Bowl American Short Pump.
