Women’s Bowling Finishes First Traditional Format Tournament of Season in Fifth Place at Bud Whitman Memorial

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University bowling team finished their first tournament of the 2021-2022 season with a fifth-place finish in the traditional styler portion of the Bud Whitman Memorial on Sunday, hosted by Chestnut Hill at Bowlerama.

The Wildcats went 2-3 in head-to-head contests, defeating Chestnut Hill and Felician. They finished with a total pinfall of 4,303 for a five-match average of 172.1 to finish fifth overall.

Wilmington started slow on Sunday, finishing with less than 900 pins in their first three matches. They dropped matches to Caldwell, 847-831, Mount St. Mary's, 985-841, and Kutztown, 876-767, before turning it around and defeating Chestnut Hill, 907-766, and Felician, 957-921.

Sophomore CC Riojas led the Wildcats on Sunday, finishing 13th overall with a 180.60 average. She had a day's high 220 in the first match of the day against Caldwell. She finished with scores of 175, 188, 143, and 177 for a 903 total.

Rachel Hirst was directly behind Riojas in 14th place with an 887 total for a five-match average of 177.40. She had a day's high of 190 in the final game of the day against Felician. Her day started with scored of 172, 185, 166, and 174 for her 887 total.

Desiree Dent made her collegiate debut with a four-game total of 720, bowling a 180.00 average for a 20th place finish. She bowled the final four matches of the day, with an afternoon high of 207 against Chestnut Hill. She was the only Wildcat to have two 200-game scores on the day, also bowling a 203 against Felician. She bowled a 174 against Mount St. Mary's and a 136 against Kutztown.

Sydney Jones also made her collegiate debut in traditional matches on Sunday, bowling a four-game total of 678 for a 169.50 average. She had a day's high of 205 against Chestnut Hill. She bowled a 139 against Caldwell, a 145 against Kutztown, and a 189 against Felician to finish in 22nd overall.

Malia Stout finished directly behind Jones in 23rd overall, finishing with a four-game total of 677 for a 169.25 average. She had a day's high 198 against Felician and started the day with scores of 141 against Caldwell and 160 against Mount St. Mary's. She also bowled a 178 against Chestnut Hill.

KC Miller finished in 32nd overall with a three-game total pinfall of 438, good enough for a 146 average. She bowled the first three games of the day, going for scores of 159, 147 and 132 for her 438.

KC Miller was named to the Baker Format All-Tournament Team on Saturday after averaging 189 in Baker Frames.

The Wildcats have next weekend off but return to action on Saturday, October 23 when they head to the Mercyhurst Invite in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Mercyhurst Invite will be a two-day tournament.
