Women’s Bowling Goes 8-2 at Mercyhurst Invite, Advances to Championship Match

ERIE, Pa. - - The Wilmington University bowling team finished second in the 2021 Mercyhurst Invitational on Sunday, falling in the Championship bracket match to Duquesne but went 8-2 overall on the weekend, bowled at the Rolling Meadow Lanes hosted by Mercyhurst University.

The Wildcats rolled through three Baker format matches on Sunday, putting down over 1,000 pins in two matches before defeating Daemen in the Bracket semifinal. But NCAA Division I foe Duquesne defeated the Wildcats, 977-955, in the Bracket Championship, as the Wildcats finished second overall.

The Wildcats went 4-1 in Traditional matches on Saturday and the Wildcats went 4-1 on Sunday, finishing 8-2 overall in the tournament with a total pinfall of 9,545 for a 190.9 match average.

On Sunday, the Wildcats started their three Baker format matches with a 973-939 victory over Daemen. They then turned on the jets and defeated Medaille, 1,037-845, ranking as the fifth most pins in a Baker match in program history. They nearly duplicated that performance with a 1,035-759 victory against host Mercyhurst in their final Baker format match, ranking sixth most pins for a single Baker match.

In their first Position Baker match, the Wildcats defeated Daemen, 935-828, in the Semifinal, advancing to the Championship match against Duquesne. But the Dukes got the better of the Wildcats in the final match of the tournament, as the Wildcats took second, 977-955.

The Wildcats are done for the month of October, and will fine tune their games until they return to competition on Friday November 19. They head to the three-day tournament, the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic, hosted by UMES in Millsboro, Delaware. The tournament will be held at the Millsboro Lanes.
