Florida Southern proved to be too much for the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team as the No. 8 Mocs defeated the Wildcats, 19-6, on Tuesday night at Bryant Stadium.
The Mocs (3-1) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half before the Wildcats (1-2) scored three of the final five goals of the half to cut into the deficit before the break.
The Wildcats were nearly even at the draw in the first half but the Mocs forced the Wildcats into 15 turnovers, which led to a 26-6 shot advantage for the home team in the first 30 minutes.
The Mocs scored the first three goals of the second half to open a 15-3 lead before the Wildcats came back with three of the next four tallies to pull to within 16-6 with 9:27 left in regulation. But Florida Southern finished out the game with the final three marks.
Florida Southern held the slight advantage, 14-12, on draw controls, and a 25-19 advantage on ground balls.
Six different Wildcats scored in the game, led by Rebekah McCurry and La'Dae Boykin who tallied a goal and an assist each. Katie Spence, Megan Keffer, Gabby Spalt, and Maddie Hewitt all scored one goal in the contest.
McCurry led the team with six ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers while Hewitt added three ground balls, two draws, and two caused turnovers.
Corinne Dries recorded 10 saves in the game for the Wildcats while Ashley Sebrowski recorded nine saves for the Mocs.
Florida Southern was led by Caitlin Chase's four goals while Dovey Foote added three goals off the bench.
The Wildcats Florida trip rounds out with a contest at Tampa on Friday afternoon. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
