The top seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament was too much for the fourth seeded Wilmington University women's lacrosse team, 21-10, as Holy Family captured the CACC Tournament Semifinal match Saturday afternoon at Georgian Court University.
A five-goal stretch midway through the first half put the Tigers (13-3) ahead, 6-1, before the Wildcats (7-11) went into the halftime break by the same goal difference, 9-4.
The teams traded goals in the first four minutes of the second half as Megan Keffer and La'Dae Boykin tallied goals for the Wildcats, but the visitors were still down 11-6 with 26:08 to play. The Tigers then used four consecutive goals to open a 15-6 lead and put the game away.
Gabby Spalt and Keffer scored back-to-back goals to pull to within 15-8, but the Tigers scored six of the last eight goals of the game to settle on the final score.
Holy Family outshot the Wildcats, 24-8, in the first half while out-shooting them 45-24 for the game. Turnovers hurt the Wildcats, as they gave the ball away 16 times while the Tigers only turned the ball over nine times on the day. The Tigers also used an 11-3 advantage in draw controls in the first half to produce the early lead.
Sara LeBrun led the Wildcats with four goals on Saturday, upping her season total to a single season program record of 60 goals. Keffer scored twice in the second half while Boykin added two goals on the day as well. Spalt scored once while McCurry added a goal and an assist. McCurry added to her single season points record with her two points today, setting a new mark with 74 this year.
Corinne Dries made 10 saves in the first half, totaling 15 on the day. Tigers' netminder Grace Deckert made seven stops in the second half to keep the Wildcats from coming back, totaling 10 on the afternoon.
The Wildcats captured their first CACC Tournament win in program history in the CACC Quarterfinal round and advanced to the CACC Semifinals for the first time since the 2012 season.
Seven Wildcats played their final game of their career as Dries, McCurry, Keffer, Ashley Koll, Chelsie Maher, Maddie Hewitt, and Katie Spence donned the Green, Black, and White for the last time.
