NEWARK, Del. - - The Molloy Lions were efficient with their shots on Saturday afternoon, scoring 22 goals on 25 shots in defeating the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team, 22-7, in nonconference action at the WU Athletics Complex.
After missing wide with their first shot of the game, the Lions (7-3) found the back of the net with their next 17 shot attempts. The Wildcats (0-6) kept up with the Lions in the shot department, but needed 18 shots to score their seven goals in the game. The Lions narrowly outshot the Wildcats, 14-11, in the first half.
Molloy scored the first two goals of the game before the Wildcats got on the board with 26:16 left in the first half. Sara LeBrun scored on the man-advantage on a free position shot to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
But Molloy went on the attack again, scoring five straight before the Wildcats got on the board again. LeBrun added her second of the game off an assist from Megan Card with 17:05 left in the first half to bring the score to 7-2. Molloy tallied four straight goals again, however, taking an 11-2 lead with 8:50 to play. La'Dae Boykin got on the scorecard with 7:41 left in the half but the Lions tacked on two more to end the stanza, 13-3.
Alexis Olsen started the scoring for the Wildcats in the second half, but the momentum swung in favor of the Lions once again as they scored the next three goals. Card scored an unassisted goal with 20:49 to play and Boykin and Shawna Chopko scored back-to-back goals with 10:51 showing on the scoreboard. The Lions finished out the game with the final three goals, 22-7.
The Wildcats controlled more draws, 18-13, but the Lions out shot the Wildcats, 25-18, and picked up more ground balls, 19-16.
Saturday wrapped up the nonconference season for the Wildcats, as they begin Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action next week. The Wildcats head to rival Chestnut Hill on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. night game.
